5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance!, October 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Live in Rio [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Okay, so the video was shot outside and at night- you may get a little annoyed at the proliferation of reds and blues on the screen. But to say that this video does not live up to an actual Malmsteen live performance does not give him, his band, or this video justice. The sound quality is good, and sounds better the louder I turn it up. The onstage antics are not something you will see at a Dio or Iron Maiden concert, but by throwing the guitar around and kicking guitar picks at the audience, there are enough non-musical antics to let you know you are getting something other than a studio performance. The musicianship on this video is simply astounding; YJM keeps getting better as the years move on. You will hear little bits and pieces of ideas he used on the Concerto album, mixed in with solos from older albums. He plays enough material note for note that you will recognize older songs, yet his improvisational skills are on the level of genius.Tracks: My Resurrection/ Facing the Animal/ Rising Force/ Bedroom Eyes/ Far Beyond the Sun/ Like an Angel/ Braveheart/ Seventh Sign/ Spasebo-Solo-Manic Depression (sung by Yngwie)-Solo/ Never Die/ Black Star/ I'll See the Light TonightMusicians: Mats Leven on vocals/ Barry Dunaway on bass/ Mats Olausson on keys/ Jonas Ostman on drumsRunning time approximately 1:20

3.0 out of 5 stars Calling Elvis, November 23, 1999

This review is from: Live in Rio [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Several years ago I purchased a copy of the "Live in Lenningrad" show and have watched it many times. I am amazed by Mr. Malmsteens stage presence. As a rule I don't require fancy antics to enjoy a concert but for some reason I love this guy! He is the Elvis Presley of electric guitar complete with gyrating hips and karate kicks this guy has completly mastered the art of electric rock guitar. The more recent "Live in Rio" concert depicts a Yngwie Malmsteen looking somewhat akin to the "fat Elvis" but he can still make his guitar practically ignite with lightning fast blues- runs and explosive power- chord blasts from his 500 watt amplifiers. What makes this video worth owning is the impressive rendition of Hendrix's Manic Deppression as well as some other Yngwie favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good Yngwie live video even though lights get annoying., April 21, 2000

This review is from: Live in Rio [VHS] (VHS Tape)
First off this live perfomance with Matt Levins on vocals is NOT as good as the classic Live in Lenningrad video but it's still pretty d#m good.I agree with a past reviewer that the bright red and blue lights flashing thoughout the show get a bit annoying especialy during "Black Star." Still this video is a must for every Yngwie fan just to get the chance to hear the shredding machine himeself play on guitar and display his joyfull onstage antics from his karate kicks to twirling and throwing his stratocaster guitar in the air on several occasions.I can't believe he didn't drop his guitar once!It cool to see live performances of songs like My Resurrection,Facing the Animal,Rising Force,Like An Angel,I'll See the Light Tonight,Far Beyond the Sun,Never Die,Bedroom Eyes,Braveheart and what seemed to be the crowd's favorite the Seventh Sign.It was during Seventh Sign that the crowd hopped and pumped their fist up in the air with excitement!Yngwie still has the touch and shows why he is still loved and adored by many loyal fans in Europe,Japan, and South America.
