Editorial Reviews

Wynton Marsalis said, Ben Wolfe swings with authority. Downbeat Magazine says, He hews to the aesthetic of group interplay and the rhythms of bebop, and displays a well- honed sense of sonic narrative. Early on in Wolfe s career, he formed a duo with Harry Connick Jr. and went on to record over a dozen albums and soundtracks. He then joined the Wynton Marsalis Septet and remained there until joining Diana Krall s touring band. For his SmallsLIVE release, Wolfe is joined by tenor saxophonist Marcus Strickland and Lincoln Center bandmate Ryan Kisor on trumpet. In the rhythm section is Luis Perdomo on piano and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. The set is all originals and the delight of the crowd is clearly heard and for obvious reasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable Straight Ahead Swinging Jazz April 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
As many readers of my reviews may already know, I'm a huge fan of this series of live albums released by the record label Smallslive. These live sets are recorded in performance at the legendary jazz club Smalls. Here we have master acoustic bassist Ben Wolfe leading a quintet of younger trailblazers through a high energy swinging set of Wolfe compositions that if I was forced to label the music would fall somewhere in between Miles Davis's 60's quintet with Ron Carter,Tony Williams,Wayne Shorter & Herbie Hancock & Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The music isn't breaking any new ground but is played at such a high level & with such buoyant swing that if you're a fan of Miles freebop or Blakey's gospel infused hard bop you should not hesitate in buying this live album. Let me take a moment to write a few words on this stellar quintet Wolfe has assembled to bring his compositions to life. One of my personal favorites of the newer tenor men on the NYC scene Marcus Strickland is in fine form as always blowing some highly inventive lines on his tenor. On the front line with Strickland is trumpeter Ryan Kisor a strong & inventive player with a big bold sound. On piano is vet Luis Perdomo who comps with authority but ever mindful of space & dynamics in the music. On drums perhaps the most well know of the group next to the leader is the swinging Gregeory Hutchinson a veteran of bands led by Joshua Redman & a Smalls regular who appears on several of the other fine releases in this series of live albums. Wolfe's compositions are geared towards ensemble interplay & group dynamics. Wolfe is the leader but by no means tries to dominate the music, instead taking a more democratic approach that I believe serves the groups interest best. The tunes are not overly long or pushed out of shape by to much of either player during solo excursions. The melodies have a wonderful blues tinge that makes them very singable & memorable. Check this one out. Support live Jazz!

5.0 out of 5 stars As expected, Ben Wolfe never disappoints. September 18, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Along with a stellar supportive cast (Hutchinson, Kisor - WOW), Ben Wolfe leads this quintet through a unique, introspective collection of songs that would appear to have been tailor-made for this group. Set in the great backdrop that is Smalls, this album delivers. Pick it up, now, and just get lost for a little while.
