Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The String Sisters is a collaboration of the Celtic music world's top female fiddlers; Annbjørg Lien from Norway, Catriona Macdonald from Shetland, Liz Carroll and Liz Knowles from the US, Mairead ni Mhaonaigh (Altan) from Ireland and Emma Härdelin from Sweden. Originally brought together for a special one-time show at Glasgow's annual Celtic Connections festival to celebrate each of their region's musical traditions, the results of this live recording contain some of the most brilliant fiddling heard in Celtic music.

Review

These girls inspire and motivate each other, which has enabled them to create a common musical idiom that crosses national borders. They seem to glow with their joy in playing and respect each other immensely. --Nordlys (Norway)

I have had some concerns about the relevancy of Altan anymore, and what this recording makes clear in spades is that Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh is still the most inspiring and protean fiddle player ever in Irish music. Given the company she keeps on this disc, presumably arranged by Annebjorg Lien of Norway, that's no faint praise. The performance, which is also available on DVD if you have a PAL compatible player, is nothing short of the very finest fiddling you will ever hear. There is a credit acknowledging Natalie MacMaster, but in truth, it's as well she wasn't on this disc. The dancing kewpie doll schtick she is prone to would have lessened the artistry involved.
Instead, these women mean business, and when that means that Mairead, Liz Carroll, Catriona McDonald, Emma Hardelin and Lien are rosining the bows, yer bloody in for it mate. Carroll is a the finest American Fiddle player ever as well and has composed a number of signifciant reels, jigs and airs that have advanced the tradition. McDonald is one of the rising young stars in Scotland and with good reason - she is all business and has a voice to compete with the astounding Ni Mhaonaigh. Emma covers the Swedish ground and Lien the Norwegian. The rhythm section, all male, is spot on for each number. There are some extraordinary tracks here that will burn in your memory for ages. Emma's Swedish plaint segues so mystically into Mairead's transcendant take on Gollta Mo Bhride that you'll be a few seconds into the transition before you realize what has just happened. It is inspired! And inspiring! Throughout you'll hear Maired's driving attack and whoops of encouragement spurring her distaff colleagues on. They need little encouragement. These women go for the jugular on each tune and they leave no survivors.

I just rated the DVD version of this concert. In January and February 2005 six fiddle playing ladies from Noray, Sweeden, Shetland, Ireland and USA got together in Norway and did six concerts together with four guys on the piano, double bass, drums and guitar.

The playing is brilliant, the tunes are highly varied and always interesting, there are lots of interesting details. By all means, if you like fiddle music, you should buy this CD, there is probably no better CD with celtic and scandinavian music around.

What I miss though, and the reason why I didn't give the CD five stars, is that in the editing of the CD they have left out the introduction of the tunes. The only thing indicating that this is a live recording is the applause following the tunes. When I buy a live CD I like it to be live in all aspects of the word. The best thing they could have done was to release the CD as a plain recording from the concert, not edited at all. If they had done so, it would have been THE perfect CD.

By a happy accident, we found ourselves in the Old Fruitmarket in January 2007 when these women took the stage and blew us away. We brought the CD home and it quickly became a favorite. From the first notes of the first track, you know you're in for some incredibly powerful, staggeringly beautiful music. Nothing can compare with the experience of seeing and hearing this music live, but this CD stands on its own as a magnificent recording. These are some of the greatest living fiddlers, at the top of their game, with a few spectacular vocals as well. Really great to see this CD released in the US!
