4.0 out of 5 stars Sunny Day Revisited
First, I think this is a great album. I love the live quality of this recording because it makes me feel like I was there somewhere in the back of the room. It has this bass-heavy growling that you get in an old theater (and surprise it was recorded in an old theater).

I love the way the guitars sound; gritty and real like they come from an amplifier...

This album contains 6 songs from How It Feels... and 5 songs from Diary/Lp2. While some of the songs ("Days Were Golden," "in Circles", "Pillars") gain a lot live, there are many songs that sound either exactly like the album version or worse. "Every Shining Time You Arrive" doesn't work as well without the keyboard solo, and...

First, I think this is a great album. I love the live quality of this recording because it makes me feel like I was there somewhere in the back of the room. It has this bass-heavy growling that you get in an old theater (and surprise it was recorded in an old theater).

I love the way the guitars sound; gritty and real like they come from an amplifier similar to one I own.

I'm more of an early SDRE fan, but I feel that this record helped me get into post-Pink record songs a little more. For example, Guitars & Video Games was not a song I really appreciated until I heard this.

Also if you're a little burned out on In Circles, the version on this Live album rocks.

Finally, if you were a big Sunny Day Real Estate fan and haven't listened to them in a while, this record will help you rediscover them.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars. A great live experience., February 4, 2002
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
This is a much better cd than many people realize. I'm not sure what problems some people have with it-I realize the mix is good in some areas and a bit 'off' in others-but it still sounds great and I think many of these songs find their definitive versions on this disc. This is the first cd by SDRE I heard and I've since purchased all their other albums. The "Pink" lp is my favorite but this cd and "Diary" are close behind. Should not be missed. Worth the price of admission just for "Song About an Angel" and "Guitars & Video Games", both of which are better than the album versions.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING CD IF YOU'RE A DIEHARD SDRE FAN!, October 17, 2001

I had first heard that they even had a LIVE SDRE cd on a college radio station. I had called to request "IN CIRCLES" & they only had the live version. Immediately after hearing it on the radio; I went to Amazon.com to find it & purchased it.
That song live is definitely amazing. Jeremy Enigks voice is soo passionate.
All the other songs on the cd are from various cd's (past & present)Live versions are sometimes worse than cd recordings. BUt, this live version rocks!

While some of the songs ("Days Were Golden," "in Circles", "Pillars") gain a lot live, there are many songs that sound either exactly like the album version or worse. "Every Shining Time You Arrive" doesn't work as well without the keyboard solo, and "The Prophet," great song as it is, needs the aboriginee chanting to capture the full effect. Also, "J'Nuh" fails to capture the same atmosphere it did in the studio. Overall, you will enjoy this if you're a hard core fan of Sunny Day Real Estate, otherwise, stay away from this.

SDRE proves to be more then just a studio band with this recording. Filled with amazing vocals, music and quality this album one of the best live albums out today. I own many live albums, and this one stands higher then most. As an avid listener concert goer to Live jam based bands, were "live" is everything, I must agree, it is welcomed to hear a live performance equal to studio standards.

I'm shocked that 4 months after buying it, I'm still listening to this incredible album daily. I may be biased as an SDRE fan, but I had lapsed when the band broke up, and now, after the great songs on How It Feels... and this Live album, I've been listening to the pink album in my car and have pulled out the old Diary cassette that I used to love years ago. A great band, their live brilliance captured on this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars SDRE live is great, January 3, 2000

I don't know what everyone else is complaining about. This CD is really good. The only thing bad with this albumn is the fact that Sub Pop forced them to put this live CD out... The sound is so raw, and almost every song is musically improvised. I think the sound really captures part of the feeling one gets seeing these guys live. It really gives you almost every good SDRE song currently out there. Besides, you can't miss when it comes to buying a SDRE albumn. Definatly a buy.

Obviously you are incompetent. Opinions aside, the fact that you said only two songs were not on the last album is grossly incorect. Five of the eleven songs, almost half were older, with three from Diary (In Circles, Song about an Angel, & the blankets were the Stairs), and two from the pink album (J'nuh & Rodeo Jones)

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic songs in a slightly different light..., October 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
This live recording of Sunny Day Real Estate really blew me away the first time I heard it. The first thing I noticed was the newer material has just as much sonic power and emotional punch as it does on the studio album. "Pillars", one of my favorite SDRE tracks, comes across just as, if not more, potently live as it does on the record, even without the benefit of studio spit and polish. Another highlight of this record is "In Circles". The live recording of this song is absolutely amazing in that it (the mix) has so much more body and power than the original studio recording. The louds come across as being more loud and the softs are just that much softer! Great album. It is a must for any SDRE fan. I understand that there is a corresponding live video coming out as well. You can cound me in for one of those as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Go for a studio release instead, November 25, 1999

The clock-punching production mutes any potential vibrancy the live setting might have lent the songs, and the "setlist" leaves out enough gems that the disc won't work as a "Best Of" set, either. If you're new to the band, you're better off picking up any one of the studio releases first. This is an amazing band, and I suspect you'll be back for the others no matter which you choose. This one might not have the same effect. Longtime fans who have seen the band live might be a tad disappointed that the immediacy doesn't translate to disc, but how could it? It's still an essential recording for the devout.
