Low Budget TV Special Never Meant to Be a DVD When Recorded in 1991,
By
This review is from: Live In Sydney 1991 (DVD)
This is an old 1991 low budget, ie only a couple a cameras on stage, no sound recording devices out in the crowd etc made for TV concert celebrating Roxette's initial tour of Australia. Not sure who the original audience it was made for were, as there are no extras or info in the cover insert. My guess is either a Swedish TV channel celebrating the fact the rest of the world (well Australia anyway) had finally embraced and discovered their two Swedish superstars, or if it was made for a Rage (Australia's version of MTV in the early 90's) TV special. Therefore if you're considering purchasing this DVD you've got to be aware that you're not getting a made for DVD (or even video back then) concert. Roxette themselves do a magnificent performance on stage, it's just not captured as well as it was obviously done. The sound quality, pictures and so forth are very early 90s TV look. There's no cameras out amongst the crowd, apart from the ones in front of row one pointed towards the stage, the only time you see the crowd is when the cameraman up on the stage turns around and then it's only the first few rows as the rest of the crowd is more or less in darkness. The only time you hear them is when Marie holds the microphone out to them so crowd singing experience is pretty poor. The picture quality itself is somewhat poor, it's blurry at times and it is stretched to fit the screen. Not so much because the cameramen did a bad job, it's just that there were so few camera angles to compile the finished product, and a lot of the shots they obviously had to use don't have the best lighting. It may have even aired live on TV at the time so no other beyond in the field editing was ever done to the concert tracks (there's three non live tracks spliced in). The Big L is the video clip which is Roxette singing somewhat live at an empty stadium, snippets of concert footage appear every now and then with very 90s PowerPoint style sound affects telling you the brief interuption to the film clip is coming. Do You Get Excited is again the film clip with a few moments of footage the concert appearing now and then, possibly due to the live sound not being captured well enough, and finally the bonus song How Do You Do is the fun Beatles tribute film clip filmed on top of a roof. Obviously this song wasn't around at the time of the Joyride tour. The three are quite good film clips so may be a reason to purchase this alone, but you may be disappointed if you wanted the footage and especially sound to be live versions. This concert took place during the Joyride album promotional tour so a lot are from that album. The tracks on here are 1. Hotblooded 2. Dangerous 3. The Big L (film clip) 4. Watercolours in the Rain 5. Chuch of Your Heart 6. Knockin' On Every Door 7. Things Will Never be the Same 8. Dressed For Success 9. Soul Deep 10. The Look 11. It Must Have Been Love 12. Do You Get Excited? (film clip) 13. Joyride 14. Perfect Day 15. How Do You Do? (film clip) You can also get a music CD version of this concert with the exact same packaging and poor quality low pixels photo artwork (the music CD doesn't have the Big L on there). Both just jump midway into the concert with Hotblooded, there's no excited crowds chanting the band's name, or vision of their experience seeing Marie or Per for the first time. This DVD version does briefly have a thirty second behind the scenes footage between tracks of Per commenting on the mouth size of the supporting band members comparing them to Mick Jagger and Steve Tyler. The Ofwerman brothers fit whole cigarette packages in their mouths while they play an airsoccer type game. There's also Per and Marie signing guitars and other merchandise sitting at a table somewhere that looks like it was from a news bulletin. We also see them signing the tickets and things being pushed through the gaps in a wire fence by fans during the final live track Perfect Day as they leave the stage superimposed over the sound of them still singing on stage. Disappointingly there's no interviews or anything like this on the DVD. Although the sound and video quality is pretty average, you've got to remember Roxette was at their peak before made for DVD concerts were made. Back then the only place you really heard live music on CDs was as bonus tracks to singles as it just wasn't popular. At the time they finally got success on the world stage in the 90s they were already in their mid 30s (compared to the norm of bands breaking onto the scene with members aged in their mid 20s at most), so there probably never will be an on DVD experience capturing the energy and crowds back then who all knew the words to every single one of their songs. Since then Marie has been recovering from cancer treatments and a tumour being surgically removed from her brain. They are touring again this year but when you add to Marie's health and consider both of them are now in their mid 50s, it's unlikely to be the same experience if a DVD of them performing live was made now (I'd still buy it though). This made for TV special put onto DVD may be the closest we get to experiencing Roxette live, back in the era when they dominated the charts, and were at their physical and musical peak.
