Editorial Reviews

One of Australia's most famous spaces welcomed one of our most famous songwriters in early '08, and these are the delightful highlights. He and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra do medleys of Walk On By; Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head; I Say a Little Prayer; The Look of Love; Do You Know the Way to San Jose , and more!

This live album is strictly for diehard fans of Burt Bacharach and collectors, like myself. There is nothing new on the CD as far as song selection goes. There are new renditions and arrangements of his old classics sung by Burt's current trio of vocalists: Josie James, John Pagano and Donna Taylor, although in the case of the two women, it is not indicated which one is singing which songs. Burt himself, too, sings on several tracks--"Alfie", "The Look of Love", "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" and "Wives & Lovers". As I am in the process of trying to collect all the available songs written by Bacharach, I wish they had done a more complete rendition of "Making Love" instead of including it as part of a medley. But at least now I have the song.

I became a Burt Bacharach fan when I started piano lessons 45 years ago. I really loved his new CD and wished I could have been at that Sydney concert. This was the next best thing to being there. The CD covers the majority of his numerous past hits. Bacharach, the orchestra and his featured singers really brought alive the Bacharach sound.

I've watched Burt Bacharach's career closely for over 40 years. I think it's remarkable to find a craftsman still polishing gems that have been displayed for decades and approaching this speculular effort delivering such energy, interest in new arrangements, and a passion for leaving such an impactful performance on anyone who hears this. For a writer and record producer he has been a rare success story to cross as a performer. Yet remember, he started as a conductor and understands live audiences. He produces and guards every detail of his work with one thing in mind, making sure his fans were pleased.
This CD borders on being overwhelming as one realizes the depth of his lifetime of work. This CD is the cream of the crop. He's written over 500 songs. These titles have stood the test of time, will live forever, and this performance is a look at his legacy of hard work. I ordered multiple copies and gave as Christmas presents. He has clearly been a gift to our world as well as to my life. It is a treasure.

By any standard, this is Burt bacharach at his best, re-interpreting to some extent the best work produced during his prime. The excellent musical quality of the show is reproduced superbly on this cd, making for highly exciting listening to complex melodies which continue to astonish in their unexpected, astonishing changes of tempo. "Walk on By", for instance, reproduces many of the subtleties of Dionne Warwick's original rendition, with a few novel changes by the singer that keep this masterly song fresh and original. All the (unknown to me) singers do justice to these classic pieces, no doubt under bacharach's guidance, and I would have liked to know specifically who they were, but - although I assume they are affiliated to the Sydney Opera House - none of them are acknowledged by name, which seems strange. This is my only quibble.

This is a lovely cd,and for some reason the male performances are more interesting than the female performers. Perhaps this is because Dionne Warwick was and is the stellar interpreter of the David/Bacharach songbook.
But all quibbling aside a Bacharach live symphony recording is a treat for us fans!
The price is great too!
Long live Burt!!

excellent CD although when recorded, it appears that the microphone was at a distance from the orchestra so you have to turn the volume up. bacharach plays all of his songs through the years. enjoyed it and very relaxing. it would be a good idea to have a DVD also.

Mr. Bacharach's latest cd is a true keper for all fans of either Burt's interpretations of his own material, and to those who are familiar with his work. Personally, I find myself in the first: I am a huge fan of Burt's own material. Sure, I like many of Dionne's songs, but to listen to Burt's brilliance in orchestration, melody and use of different instruments is just awesome. The previous 2 live Burt cds were ok: 1972'2 'Live in Japan'* which is not available in the US (but you can get it if you either buy the 'Something Big' box set OR pay up to $50 for the Japanese release) and 'One Amazing Night' has recent acts doing the maestro's work, with Burt on piano.
PLUSES:
If you want to relax, take it easy and expose yourself to how a song should be written and performed, listen to 'Live at the Sydney Opera House'.
MINUSES:
It would've been nice to listen to Burt doing tracks of 'At This Time' or anything from the 'Woman' album, possibly 'New York Lady'.
* I have always wondered why 'Living Together', 'Live in Japan' 'Futures', or 'Woman' have never been officially released in the US.

I am a HUGE Burt Bacharach fan, ever since I was 12 years old. As I have gotten older I have appreciated his music more and more. What a fantastic collection of his work gathered on one CD. His music never grows old and to hear it over and over again is a treat I can't say about many artist. I can listen to Anyone Who Had A Heart, One Less Bell, A House Is Not A Home and Make It Easy On Yourself until the cows come home and never tire of them. Alfie has to be one of the greatest songs ever written. Hal David's lyrics are as timely as Burt's music, and the two of them have given us so many wonderful songs that will live on forever. This CD is brilliant. One of my most prized possessions is my autographed picture of Burt, it hangs in a place of honor. Although I wasn't present at this concert, I have been lucky enough to witness him in concert and what an honor and privilege it was to be in the same room as one of my heroes and then to have him sign his photo after the show was a dream come true.
