Not to be over looked!,

This review is from: Live From The Time Coast (Audio CD)
I'm surprised that no one has attempted too review this excellent recording. Now I'm not saying that everything on here is a 5 star performance. But if your like me a big fan who had about three chances to see this band and for what ever excuse that came up never got the opportunity. This will definetly help ease some of the guilt. For myself this is a very enjoyable listen. Mick Skidmore has done a fabulous job assembling a varried selection of songs done live that are done in order of what you might have seen them performed at one of those second rate club environments that Randy and the boys had to play in the later stages of their career. Not only do you here the brillance of the guitar playing of Randy California, but you also get an intimate feeling of a man that loved his music with a devotion too his art to which he refused to compromise. Some of the musical highlights for me on Disc #1 the intro to Soldier, the 13 plus min All along the Watch tower, plus an 8 and half minute version of Downer. Disc #2 In a young mans eyes a song written with his young son in mind,Holy man, Fresh garbage, and Darlin if just to mention a few of many selections. Mr. Skidmore also has assembled a nice selection of photo's along with historical facts and revalations about Randy and the band Spirit. All in all a great package that no true fan should be without. So, if you are a fan you definetly need to add this to your collection you'll be glad you did!!!!

Rare Live Spirit - A Randy California feast,

This review is from: Live From The Time Coast (Audio CD)
Although, to my knowledge, no official recording of the original Spirit lineup was ever released (a true loss), once the band fractured into Jay Ferguson's Jo Jo Gunne (check out their first album!) and Randy California's Spirit with Ed Cassidy on drums, this recording produced from Randy's archives - along with some rare 70's stuff - is to my knowledge all that remains of Spirit in live performance. The real score on this 2 disc set are some great jams, both spacey and straight-ahead (the "Fresh Garbage" alone is worth the price of the both discs!), as well as very rare solo acoustic Randy tunes, a throwback to when he used to play Greenwich Village as a folky (just before he ran into that Hendrix guy who seems to have persuaded him to go electric). This is a must listen for anyone who is a committed Spirit and/or Randy California fan. And the sound quality for most of the tunes is very good. Go for it!

W hen Its Good Its Good......,

When Its Bad It Shouldnt Be Included. The rabid and not so fans want the Spirit singnature songs-i.e. 'Fresh Garbage' , 'I Got A Line On You' 'Animal Zoo' 'All Along The Watchtower' 'Dark Eyed Woman', etc. And They GET 'EM on this double disc set...well just for the asking! Though these toons have been worn to death.....nothing new about em.
Uh-huh...those 'career songs!' Have gone to many a Spirit concert, and these overplayed little conspirators were never left out! Would have RATHER had some of the mo' obscure toons extracted from their quite amassed catalogue of good singing and good playing. Well to say the least, some of 'em have been resurected via thru the time and patience of 'music curator' and Spirit conessiuer Mr. Mick Skidmore. So this is a rather good balance of the 'overall familar' , paired up with some of Randy California's timeless/dusted off gems. Several of the rather overlooked and ignored 'Tent of Miracles' collection are well represented here inc. the title track, 'Ship of Fools' (sung by bassist Mike Niles), and 'Logical Answers.' Not to forget some of the group's sonic sounding Mercury (label) highlights - 'Victim of Society' and 'Holy Man.' In itself , def. worth of the price of admission. And to add a delectable icing to the Spirit rock and rollin cake are the VERY noteworthy comps, 'Downer' (from the Capt. Kopter songbook) and 'Turn to the Left' (the extremely obscure 'single' curtailed from Spirit's rather 'wacky' and 'Randy-hip' 'Potatoland' confab of 1980.) As for the three stars...for one...this could've been sized nicely down to a single disc, secondly a few mo' rarely heard Spirit goodies could've replaced some of the more known ones(mentioned above)! Nevertheless....still recommended for those who injoy variety as their spice of life Another surprize is the grand inclusion of the even more rarer 'Rapture in the Chambers.' Interesting guitar intro by Mr. California btw!
