This review is from: Live To Tell (MP3 Download)
Madonna shot onto the scene as a boy toy with a party-till-you-drop attitude. Or so we thought. She ended up being a dynamo dedicated to her craft, disciplined to the hilt, desperate to overcome her tough Michigan beginning and take over the world. She changed the landscape of music and women's lives forever, whether people will admit it or not. This is the first song where her voice started to change, becoming less nasal and more defined. Her haunting and strong alto range tells the tale of a nameless person singing of a longing for beauty in the midst of a world of sorrow. You felt her pain, the betrayals of the past which still stung, the desire to create a life of peace in impossible circumstances. The simple but deep and dark music underscores the subtle work Madonna performed here. This is the song that led us to understanding the "new" Madonna, a lovely but sad lady underneath the vivacious persona. The simple dress and plain grey background in the video matches the tone of the song perfectly. This was Madonna: Stripped, but she started her new musical style with a whisper, not a shout. The lyrics are meaningful to anyone who has seen the dark side of mankind. Live long enough, and you'll understand the lyrics on a whole new level every time you listen. One of her finest songs, which was on an underrated album.
