Old Jazzers Never Die, They Just Keep Makin' Great Music, September 28, 2009
This review is from: Live From Toronto's Cafe Des Copains - Art Hodes Piano - Jim Galloway Saxophone (Audio CD)
Art Hodes' and Jim Galloway's "Live from Toronto's Cafe des Copains" is, I'll bet you've already guessed it, a live album recorded at the Cafe des Copains on September 25, 1988. It's a set of duets between these old pros - Mr Hodes was in his eighties - Mr Galloway was a mere child of 52.
Mr Hodes was one of our best dixieland and Chicago-style pianists; Mr Galloway is an outstanding dixieland and swing tenor and soprano sax guy. According to the album's liner notes they had no rehersal time prior to the performnce - just an opportunity to share some thoughts over a cup of coffee. No matter! They were both so familiar with traditional jazz and their styles were so complimentary, that they play as though they'd been joined at the hip for months.
The set is an even dozen songs from the traditional jazz canon - although they slip in Horace Silver's "The Preacher" - songs like Fats Waller's "Squeeze Me" and McHugh and Field's "Doing the New Lowdown." There's a wonderful version of "Tennessee Waltz" and an absolutely gorgeous version of "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."
As for the sonics? Frankly, I wish they were better. The sound quality, although decent, seems "flat" to me - I don't "hear the room" as I usually do with live recordings. But the music is still there and the opportunity to listen to two masters of traditional jazz shouldn't be missed.
