JOHN PRINE IS BEST EXPERIENCED LIVE,
By A Customer
This review is from: Live on Tour (Audio CD)
The music and wit of John Prine have always been things that are best expereinced in a live setting. While John's studio releases are always a pleasure, it's his live shows and storytelling that set him apart from the rest.
It's good to see that John won his recent fight with cancer and is back on the road. He is truly a songwriting legend. If you can't see John live, this might be the next best thing. If you have seen his shows, then this new disc is a great reminder of just how powerful and enjoyable those shows were.

Excellent live album,

First impression: remarkable, crystal-clear production! Somebody finally figured out how to record a decent live album. The rockers are clear as a bell and songs intended to be intimate come off as such. Notable funny moments in "Jesus: The Missing Years" and "Space Monkey"...where I laughed until it hurt. But the real corker is an absolutely brilliant, lead-off "Picture in a Picture Show". So John, when is it you are coming to Indy?

studio tracks sound even better live,
By A Customer
This review is from: Live on Tour (Audio CD)
This album shows that some artist need to be heard live to fully apreciate their music. What really sets this release apart is that the songs from "Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings": Quit Hollerin' at Me, Humidity Built the Snowman, and Lake Marie, are not just copied note for note, but are expanded on, and greatly improve on the studio recording. A must for all John Prime fans and a good introduction for those who may not yet be familure with his work.

The creative sound of John Prine,

It was in the early 80's during John Prine's Nashville stint, on Country Music Television that I first heard of John Prine. He had a video for "The Sound of Lonliness" which is on the German Afternoons CD. I was clearly moved by the simple video, his voice, and the message of lonliness in the song. It was a little different that what was considered country at the time. To listen to John Prine music means that you really listen to the lyrics and his unique stories in song. You don't just listen to John, you become engrossed in the humorous, sad, lifting and versatile music. It anything can be said, John can write about it. The LIVE ON TOUR is excellent! Sound is superb, and the selections are creative! ...Rizzo

I like that many of the song arrangements are different than on the original recordings - there's a nice acoustic version of Storm Windows, and a version of Daddy's Little Pumpkin with the band, etc.
If you're a Prine fan, you'll love this CD. A warning, though: Illegal Smile is a sing-a-long with the audience, and Jesus The Missing Years includes a lot of audience laughter. I find it distracting. You were warned. The last three songs are studio recordings.

On Tour, a supersonic live show by the master songster John Prine, and may well be "one" of the best live albums ever recorded. Listen for the explosiveness of the opening intro with, "Picture Show", or the rockin' blues rendition of "Quit Hollerin' At Me", better than the studio version with the blues flavor added, or the hilarious, "Space Monkey", and the all time Prine favorite, "Jesus The Missing Years", and there's always someone sitting out there with an, "Illegal Smile", in which John Prine always includes audience participation to help sing it along.. hear the tight arrangements on ,"Lake Marie", really admirable..This is a good time for all, especially for John Prine and his audience , a good time listening recording, from the genius singer-songwriter himself. The last three tracks are studio cuts,I've heard better Prine songs, mainly album fillers. There is another live album out there, titled JOHN PRINE LIVE,excellent, - John Prine,"God's favorite songwriter", - Kristofferson.

For all of the old rockers out there, this is one of the best and I'm glad he made it again.

I just got home from a John Prine concert about an hour ago. It was an incredible experience and John really seemed tickled at the response he got from the audience. Soooo, I just had to order this CD as what some other reviewers have stated is definitely right on--you must see him perform live. This CD will help keep the concert experience alive for some time to come.
