5.0 out of 5 stars LIVE TRANE: european bliss, September 22, 2005
This review is from: Live Trane (Audio CD)
sure, there are alot of live Coltrane albums out there, so why should this one be so special? well, for starters, Eric Dolphy sharing the creative space with Coltrane and his band is always thrilling. but these disc showcase the changing direction of John Coltrane and his ever-shifting musical directions over the course of the early 60's. his perfected "sheets of sound" multi-chord attack is well presented here, as well as alot of the droning aspects that he would later continue to develop. it's wonderful to hear these sort of explorations worked up live. most of the sound quality to these recordings is great, there are a few loose edges where the tape fades and a bit of roughness at times, but i actually find that aspect to be rather appealing. it adds an interesting depth to the atmosphere of the listening experience. but like i said, most of the sound is great. there are 32 tracks on these 7 discs and it's hard to pick out standouts because it is entirely brilliant. since amazon doesn't list the tracks for this, i'll do it for you.

disc 1: impressions/my favorite things/blue train/naima/impressions/my favorite thing

disc 2: mr. p.c./miles' mode/my favorite things/norman granz introduction/bye bye blackbird//the inch worm/ev'ry time we say goodbye

disc 3: mr. p.c./my favorite things/the inch worm/mr. p.c./naima

disc 4: traneing in/bye bye blackbird/impressions/swedish introduction/traneing in/mr. p.c.

disc 5: naima/the promise/spiritual/impressions/i want to talk about you/my favorite things

disc 6: mr. p.c./lonnie's lament/naima/chasin' the trane/my favorite things

disc 7: afro blue/cousin mary/i want to talk about you/impressions

the packaging on this release is unfortunately, nothing special. basic cd jewel cases with minimal design and a booklet that is average. some good photos...but nothing extraordinary. but that's ok, i guess. it's the music that will move you...and what sweet beautiful music it is.
