5.0 out of 5 stars I simply love her
I know that I am not really objective because I am French and I have been loving Vanessa for more than ten years now. I also must admit that a lot of people criticize her. But I don't give a damn! This album is beautiful. I was at the concert when it was recorded and the feeling was extraordinary! I simply love her. So buy it because even if you are not a fan,...

3.0 out of 5 stars She reminds me of Frank Zapper's daughter a lot.
I just bought a few of her CD'S and I thought her voice was very immature but on the other hand she reminds me of Frank Zappers daughter
which is a big compliment. Though she is not as rocking and progressive as Zappa's daughter she still reminds me of her except the high notes that come at the end of most sentences in songs by Miss Zapper. Who I have not been able...

Vanessa, I love you, and if one day you get to read this, send me a little e-mail because you are the best. Go on like that!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rather pleasant surprise, March 23, 2000
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
Of course I'd heard about Ms. Paradis (a/k/a Mrs Depp) long ago: how she'd become teenage superstar in the late 80s, and I'd seen the world-famous Chanel ad. But nothing quite prepared me for the surprise of hearing her sing live.

This CD is very good, solid and rythmic. Her renderings of Lou Reed's "Waiting for the man", Marianne Faithfull's "As Tears go By" (as penned by the Stones) and her biggest hits "Joe Le Taxi" and "Be my Baby" (a retro tune if there ever was one and super catchy!)are tuneful and well-arranged.

All in all this is an entertaining live recording that reveals that the talents of Vanessa Paradis are quite many and she is rather good at her craft. Most decidedly not Tori Amos or Björk, but much better than many others. Her charisma oozes from the songs and this CD gets more than a dozen spins once started!

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming intoxicating live performance from Supermodel, July 1, 1998
By
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
Vanessa Paradis has shown that she is not only a model, but also possesses a sweet voice which can charm and woo any listener. On this CD of live songs she performs all her greatest hits from her previous three albums. The second song, Les Cactus which is a well known tune in France will surprise many Americans with it's fresh sound. She runs through vocal performances with the greatest of ease and the overall sound on the album is surprisingly good considering it is a live recording. She delights with As tears go by, a cover of the Rolling Stones song. Also included is some of the great successes she had with Lenny Kravitz. Any Lenny Kravitz fan will do well to buy this album. Songs like Be me Baby and Sunday Mondays which were huge hits all over the world are done with great enthusiasm and the listener sits enthralled as she glides through the songs with her haunting voice. Some other big hits included on the album are Tandem, Natural High, I'm waiting for that man and Joe le Taxi. I can recommend this album for anyone looking for something fresh and different. This is an album that will make you fall in love with the artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO MUCH FUN!, July 9, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
This ablum is so much fun! I swear sometimes when I listen to it I feel like I am at one of her concerts. If you don't know who Vanesssa is, she is like the Britney Spears of France & Europe. Her songs are amazing becuase they're so simple and sweet. Very basic rhythems and tunes. I would like to congradulate Vanessa for using her talent to it's fullest, and making song without profanity, for writing alot of her own songs, and for always taking the right path, not the easy one. She doesn't realease an ablum every year to stay popular, so when you get one of her ablums you know it's the highest quality music availible. Don't buy this ablum as your first Vanessa ablum, you won't appreciate it until you get some of her other ablums first. I would recommend getting "M&J" and "Vanessa Paradis" first. If you're already a fan, this is one of her greatest ablums. Like I said before, it's just fun. It's a must-have for fans. Incredible. Theres not much more I can say about this.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD, July 17, 2000

Vanessa grows on you. At first, her childish voice is troublesome. But it is a lovely voice and she does a lot of great stuff. She is full of fun. She has enough talent to sink a battleship. If you like Lenny Kravitz, she covers about 7 of his songs in English and well. Her English is better than most of us! (So is her French.) This is a good album for those who don't speak French, or who are a little bit rusty. It would not be hard to develop a crush on this girl.

4.0 out of 5 stars Her First Live Album : And Still the Best, April 23, 2008
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
While Vanessa Paradis "Au Zenith" album from 2000 would go on to become a legendary success in her native France (indeed, the DVD of the show is one of the highest selling music DVDs of all time in France and Belgium), most listeners tend to forget this cute debut live CD from a singer who is often unfairly criticized.

Biased as I am as a huge Paradis supporter, its hard not to be won over by the contents of this CD. Its old - an artifact from the early 1990s, but its' warm intimate setting and perfect song choice will make you a new fan. This is the perfect CD for a rainy day when you decide to spend time indoors. Also, the fantastic flip-flop between French songs and English songs make this a disc that will be accessible to even non-French speakers.

This concert was recorded after the release of Paradis' 1992 English language debut, and contains versions of songs from her first three albums ("M&J" from 1987, "Variations Sur Le Meme T'Aime" from 1990, and "Vanessa Paradis" from 1992). I would say that she sings her earlier material with a maturity that elevates some of the weaker songs into scores that can be reckoned with. Prime example would be "Maxou", which was an infantile singalong track on her debut CD. With the gift of time, Paradis transforms it into an acoustic set that really works.

Perennial crowd favorite "Joe Le Taxi" sounds good as ever, but its on underrated classic "Marilyn and John" (one of the Top 20 Pop songs in History, in my book) that Vanessa really comes into her own. People tend to forget that this woman knows how to choose good tunes, regardless of whether she's writing them or not.

She fares slightly better on certain English songs as well. "Be My Baby", the most famous song from her 1992 album actually sounds much, much better live (its drowned in production on disc), and "Sunday Mondays" remains that fun slice of 1960s-influenced pop that us fans of Paradis have come to know and love. On the Gainsbourg-written songs from her second album, Vanessa sings "Tandem", and the simply gorgeous "Dis Lui Toi" (try scouring the web for a live version of this that she sang with Etienne Daho - its to die for).

All in all, an excellent concert. The sound quality is impeccable, and this is one of those rare discs that actually let the singers' voice breathe and give it center stage - Vanessa's songs are very dependent on the lyrics, especially those from her cryptic 1990 album, and its great to listen to her enunciate every word to the max. Just beautiful.

Despite this albums' lesser popularity, I consider it a vital addition to Vanessa's small discography. It may not win over huge audiences now or in the future, but you appreciate good, soulful French music with heart, look no further. The album closer, "Just as Long as you are There", alone, is worth the price of this import.

Also check out her 1990 album, and her stellar 2007 release "Divinidylle"
