Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Live at the Village Vanguardcaptures guitarist Marc
Ribot in an electrifying set with his trio, featuring
bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Chad Taylor.
Not only was it Ribot s debut as a leader at the
iconic venue, the occasion also marked the first
appearance by Grimes since 1966 right before
his mysterious 35-year disappearance from the
scene when he played on the landmark album
Albert Ayler In Greenwich Village. Grimes subsequent
re-emergence on the jazz scene in 2003 with all
of his performing faculties intact is testament to
the power of music and the human spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incandescent, inspired improvisation! August 28, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a fantastic live recording from June 30th, 2012, with Marc Ribot on electric guitar, Henry Grimes on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums. With the late Roy Campbell, Jr. on trumpet, they recorded Spiritual Unity in 2004, a tribute to Albert Ayler. While I miss Roy Campbell, who died way too soon, this album is even better than that excellent set, which was recorded in the studio with the exception of a live "Bells." Henry Grimes (b. 1935) was Ayler's bass player, stopped playing after Ayler's death in 1970, and only started playing music again in 2002.

This live set opens and closes with Coltrane numbers from the 1965 album "Sun Ship." The 15'07 "Dearly Beloved" gets things off to a great start, heading for open space right out of the gate, setting a serious, spiritual tone. Next comes the Albert Ayler tune "Wizard," which starts with a rollicking beat that sounds like Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" before building to another ecstatic peak.

Some free jazz/improv purists may cringe or scoff, but the inclusion of beautiful, touching ballads rounds out the sonic palette very effectively, making room for heart-on-the-sleeve romanticism. "Old Man River" is the perfect vehicle for Ribot to demonstrate his mastery of the ballad.

Now comes the centerpiece of the concert, a 19'09 "Bells," the great Ayler song. It is only several minutes in that the theme is first stated. After wild improvising, it is restated, and then at the 14-minute mark there is a passage that sounds like blues-rock played by Hendrix and the Band of Gypsys. Ribot and Taylor, the young Chicago-based drummer, are simply astonishing, and Grimes provides an imperturbable base for their flights.
