Biography

Every once in a while in life, you stumble upon something that grabs you, shakes you, touches you deep inside. And even in the moment, before it can fully sink in, you realize you have found that rarest of commodities in this airbrushed world of fakery and frauds: authenticity.

It was the summer of 2007 when I experienced just such an epiphany while browsing through one of those slightly ... Read more in Amazon's The Avett Brothers Store

Editorial Reviews

This electric performance was recorded on August 8, 2009 at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, NC. A special thrill for the band after seeing artists like Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Queen and Bob Dylan grace this same stage. Live, Volume 3 features material culled from their decade-long career including their most recent, critically acclaimed album I and Love and You. Live, Volume 3 showcases the amazing live performances that have helped The Avett Brothers build a legion of loyal fans; growing exponentially with each release, performance and appearance. The Live, Volume 3 CD is comprised of a selection of songs from the Charlotte performance.

The Avett Brothers have been known for years as an incredible live band. They've toured tirelessly for a decade, building a strong following ("The Avett Nation"). They've had a previous collection of live recordings - "Live, Volume 2" - recorded in small clubs in North Carolina. This is a great recording taken from a homecoming concert in Charlotte, and does a fine job of capturing their amazing energy on stage.

No new songs here, but consistently energetic versions of favorites.

I had caught some of these guys on a special on the Palladia channel. I told my wife about them and she surprised me with the album on Christmas. I can't get enough of it. The Avett Bros. are not just talented, but fun and entertaining. I have not been able to say this about a full length album (live or studio) for quite some time. Great from the opening note to the last bounce. If this performance does not get you up and out of your seat, making you want more - check your pulse!

I wouldn't have thought that the Ballad of Love and Hate could be improved on, but this is one of the most moving vocals you will ever hear a man sing. This comes amazingly close to seeing an Avett show. Recording quality is excellent, not at all the dry, lifeless sound Rubin has produced before. But this today, see them ASAP!

This live album gives you a little glimpse into what it is like to see the Avett Brothers at a live concert...and it is filled with raw energy, pure emotion, crazy energy and some great songs that you will find yourself learning the words to whether you usually do such things or not. You can hear the bluegrass roots (with a little punk thrown in) but then is morphs into something completely unique to the brothers. They play off one another and with one another and it is rare to see such total collaboration without signs of ego taking over. It is even better if you get the DVD to watch. Having a cello player is just the icing on a very delicious cake. They are lip smacking, jumping round clapping, and these songs show the growth of two boys into men. Very good, very great. What else can I say? Go get the CD, then the DVD and if you are lucky they will play nearby, it is worth the drive.

The harmonies, the phrasing in the lyrics, the exuberant energy, the expert musicianship...that's the Avett brothers and this cd captures them at their finest. However, as good as this cd is, if you have never seen the Avett Brothers live for yourself, stop what you are doing right now and go find tour dates and tickets. really go. Why are still reading this?! GO GET YOUR TICKETS!

The first time I heard the Avett Brothers was on this past Grammys. I was hooked from then on. They seem to be able to mix bluegrass with alternative in a type of cohesion that I never thought could be possible. Love them!

This is a great CD by a GREAT band. And it was a an incredible bargain at Amazon -- half the price of the iTunes download at the time I got it. I'm loving it. If you've never listened to The Avett Brothers, I encourage you to check this out. Listen to "I and Love and You" and "Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise" and "Ballad of Love and Hate" if nothing else, and you'll be hooked. If you know the Avett Brothers, then you'll recognize immediately that this is a gem. They sound incredible live and this cd captures that. Recorded from a Charlotte NC concert.

I have been a fan for a while, but this CD was a revelation. Now I know that the Avetts have crazy manic fans who sing all the words and cheer their favorite lyrics. And more importantly, I know how much they love their fans and their hometown of Charlotte. I have never heard a live album before in which the artists repeatedly and so emotionally expressed their love for their roots. It is so very moving.

Artistically, this CD captures all the harmonic energy of the Avett Brothers. Of course they were pumped up. The performance is pretty great, which is kind of a miracle, given all the adrenaline and emotion they were clearly experiencing. This sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime concert. As one of those old fogies who goes to a concert to actually listen to the music and see the performers, this strikes me as the perfect way to experience the concert, without all those fans jumping up and blocking my sight lines. (OK, I'm an old crab, but some of you can identify - admit it.)

I put this CD on whenever I want to put a smile on my face. The music is wonderful, the emotion is palpable, and it's just what music is all about for me.
