Editorial Reviews

This fantastic live release is available on CD and vinyl and encapsulates 25 songs from ABBA's landmark gig at Wembley Arena, London in 1979. As well as featuring a full rendition of classics, this is also the first time the track 'I'm Still Alive' has ever been released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Full Sounding Concert September 30, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
So far, so good. The music is a true concert sound... no fake drums or over dubs. I'm really enjoying the sound of ABBA in their prime. The book has very little information in it but does have a handful of images of the group, but is really just a fancy CD sleeve/jacket. If you are used to seeing and hearing ABBA on Youtube, the sound of this CD is a bit different, but in a good way. Definitely will be listening to this for a long time! Thanks to ABBA for finally releasing a true, full concert... now if we can just talk them into one last show together...

5.0 out of 5 stars At last after 35 years a full concert to savor! October 1, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As an ABBA fan from the beginning I had my doubts there would ever be a full concert on audio. We can thank the musical "Mamma Mia" for the renewed interest in ABBA that kicked off many special edition CD's and DVD's. If not for the musical this Wembley concert likely never would have been released. There was an "ABBA: Live" CD many years ago that was very good but only half as long and jumped all over from concert to concert whereas this CD is all Wembley in one evening. I wish it had been a DVD but for now an audio performance will do. There was of course the "ABBA: In Concert" DVD but it contained some chopped up and full songs as it was really only released as a TV special.
The sound is mostly excellent. "Live" performances are very hard to reproduce, let alone one 35 years ago when audio wasn't as good. Sometimes the music drowned out the singing but they did a nice job however This was ABBA's last concert after being there a week which makes this a historical and significant performance. The voices can be tired at times and the energy was low at first but it ramped up and disk 2 is especially awesome. I was surprised at how subdued the crowd was for most of the concert however. They rarely were into it but maybe thats the nature of the crowds there? I know I would have been on my feet cheering until I was hoarse.
Hearing Agnetha sing for the first time "I'm Still Alive" was worth the cost alone. Her voice has always been timeless but this was 100% pure Agnetha and beautiful. All of ABBA's hits into 1979 are on this CD and mostly sound great but as I said you could tell they were tired at times. This only makes them all the more human and real. "As Good As New" caught my ear because it sounded like it was double speed and you could even hear Agnetha breathe hard to keep up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too much bass in the remaster, otherwise good. October 1, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great document of live qualities but too much bass. Personally I think this deluxe book edition is over priced. Should have included a DVD, but hey, I was there in Munich 1979 so I can live with that.

This is a surprisingly good live show. When this release was announced, I was less than excited. Some of this music was previously released--overdubbed--as the forgettable Abba Live in 1986. That one was a listen once and file experience.

This is different. First off, they've chosen to release a full concert, not a set of songs chosen from a variety of shows. The idea is that there may be some mistakes, but they humanize the experience, and make it more interesting. I agree. But again, it also helps when you are dealing with ABBA. Not only are the lead vocals generally spot on and lovely/terrific, but the ample backing musicianship fully fleshes out the songs.

The collectors bait here is a previously unreleased song, Agnetha's "I'm Still Alive," available legitimately for the first time. It's actually a good song and not just a reason for completists to grudgingly open their wallets again.

But this set is hardly just for collectors or fanatics. This is an excellent show that reveals how gifted ABBA were.

My only complaints are that since this is 1979 it misses a good number of crucial ABBA hits and classics from the subsequent few years, and that there isn't an accompanying full length concert video.
