4.0 out of 5 stars NBA Live 2001 - Hits & Misses - Review
Ok, I picked up live 2001 the day it was released and I had already read some luke warm reviews on the title so my expections were somewhat lowered as a result. I am a huge fan of the series and I have played the previous titles more then I care to admit. After playing this game for several hours here are my opinions of the game. The graphics are the best I have ever...

The real question is what game is really the best. I have been playing EA's NBA Live '95 '96 '00 on Nintendo ever since they came out. My friend has every gaming system ever made and we play games quite frequently. In both of our opinions EA Sports should have never released this game.

The introduction when you turn the game and the menus might be cool, but lets be honest what real people want is gameplay. When it comes to gameplay and camera angles NBA Live 2001 is just plain pathetic. Players move slower and are unable to stop a defender from going around them, it's almost impossible to play defense. The players don't move smoothly and don't look very realistic (they should on a 63" HDTV). NBA 2K1 for Dreamcast has much smoother graphics and realistic gameplay. Player introductions on NBA Live don't even anounce the visiting teams players. In LIVE the players are dancing around in what is supposed to be a laser light show, which is just an attempt to mimic Sega's NBA 2K1 player introductions.

PS2 is supposed to have a faster processor than Dreamcast but we found ourselves waiting for the game to load during free throw shooting and at other times. NBA 2K1 has much more realistic replays and game play than NBA LIVE. In my honest opinion NBA Live '95 for Super Nintendo is far better the NBA Live 2001 for PS2. Is EA Sports ever going to make a good Basketball Game?

I HOPE THIS BRINGS OUT ENOUGH OF THE BAD POINTS ABOUT THIS GAME, PLEASE DON'T THROW YOUR MONEY AWAY! FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO THINK THIS GAME IS THE BEST YOU'VE EVER PLAYED, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO PLAY NBA 2K1 AND DON'T TRY TO FOOL YOURSELF THAT IT IS GOOD...

GOOD GAMING!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing............, January 26, 2001

I've been salivating since October for this particular game. To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. There is only one word for this game, WEAK. There are so many flaws in this game that I can't possibly list them all.

First of all, one thing that I dislike are lame Dreamcast fans that bash the PS2 just because the own a Dreamcast. However, the fact is that (and it saddens me to say this) NBA 2K and 2K1 blow this game away. Even though this game was delayed several times, it STILL looks like it was rushed to the market, that really annoys me. Here are a few game flaws (by no means the only flaws)

1: no franchise

2: looks and plays like a PS1 game, the step up in graphics is minimal

3: ALL camera angles are horrible (can't see down the court)

4: commentating is very uninteresting

5: stadiums look fake (compared to NBA2K)

6: Any player on the court can easily make a cross-court pass without ever being off aim or intercepted, whats the use of a point guard?

7: Computer AI is HORRIBLE on defense, they won't ever pick up an open man if the ballhandler beats a defender

It's really a shame that EA, with all of its experience in making sports games (madden for PS2 is awesome) falls so short of the feeling of a real basketball game,

3.0 out of 5 stars Wait for 2002, January 29, 2001

This is not a game you want to play season after season. Compared to Madden, this game does not have any type of franchise mode. The graphics are better but this improvement doesn't warrant a purchase. Also, coming out halfway through the current NBA season, we know that NBA Live 2002 will be out sooner than we think this October.

By then, we'll see some major improvements. We'll hopefully have the franchise mode, better game play/graphics, challenge mode, etc... If anything, this game offers less than the PS1 NBA Live 2001. The only new things we're getting is the better graphics and you can view them at your local store display or rent the game to appreciate that. Other than that, there's no reason to own this long term because EA Sports has not provided us a reason to play it long term.

Let's hope NBA Live 2002 is MUCH better.

1.0 out of 5 stars GAME SHOULD BE RECALLED (give me back my money), January 26, 2001

I was very disappointed with Live 2001. I was looking forward to it for months and it turned out to be a waste of money. The graphics are not that great. The gameplay is very slow and there are a lot of pauses or lag during the game. You cant pull up and shoot a jump shot. The shooting looks very cheesy. The replays look fake. No Franchise mode(That is a standard now with games). Crossovers are not that great. Spin Moves are terrible(Very unrealistic). EA Sports should look at the NBA 2K1 from Dreamcast and see how they do crossovers and spin moves. Players do not look like they do in real life. The game does not even come close to PS2 standards and does not live up to the expectations after playing Madden. Dreamcast's 2K1 is ten times better if not more. PS1 had a better NBA Live than this. I cant figure out how EA sports can release this game. The NBA Live from sega Genesis was great(for that technology in time). Ever since then it has gone downhill. Sega Genesis had better jumpshots and gameplay than any of the PS1 or PS2 Nba Lives. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO BUY THIS GAME. THE MORE THIS GAME IS PURCHASED THE MORE EA SPORTS WILL THINK THEY ARE DOING A GOOD JOB WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE. I do not know how anyone of the people that rated this can give it 5 stars. They must not have been playing the same game as me. The only b-ball game worth playing is NBA 2K1 from Dreamcast.

PS2 should put the amount of time they put in Madden to improve this game for next year. I have compared this to Dreamcast a lot because that is the only b-ball game worth playing. I do not have Dreamcast but have played their games. I am just very disappointed in NBA Live 2001 for PS2. I expected it to be drastically improved and to live up to the hype but it just got worse than it was last year.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Franchise, January 28, 2001

I have bought every NBA LIVE game since I've had a Super Nintendo and every year EA has made great improvements, except for now. I read and re-read the instructions and couldnt believe that they got rid of the things that made this game great. The franchise mode was the best thing for NBA Live 2000. They also got rid of the 3 point contest and instead added nothing to the game except slightly better graphics. Why oh why did they eliminate the best feature of the game. Isnt it a must for sports games? When TRIPLE PLAY 2001 comes out I hope they dont screw it up and leave out the franchise mode and the home run derby. Whoever decided to get rid of these aspects should have been fired.Game play is more realistic because teams dont shoot 70% like they use to in older versions. Except for improved graphics, NBA LIVE 2000 FOR THE PS1 IS A BETTER GAME.

Ok, I picked up live 2001 the day it was released and I had already read some luke warm reviews on the title so my expections were somewhat lowered as a result. I am a huge fan of the series and I have played the previous titles more then I care to admit. After playing this game for several hours here are my opinions of the game. The graphics are the best I have ever seen, bar none. The gameplay is a little slower then I care for, but overall it is very solid and most people will really enjoy it. The lack of a franchise mode is a complete joke, there are no free agents and you can only make 1 for 1 trades. After the first season, that's it. For EA's first run at a basketball game for the PS2 I think they have a good one, but they certainly feel short on some of the extras that made this title so appealing in the past. One last thing worth mentioning is that the game seems a little tame, I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but EA needs to increase the "fun" factor of the title. For those of you that have played NHL 2001 for the PS2, I think you would agree that after playing both titles, that EA hit the nail on the head with NHL 2001 from an excitement stand point. In summary, EA needs to incorporate the franchise mode in Madden 2001 PS2 and the excitement of NHL 2001 with the awesome graphics and style of Live 2001. Ok, so how much longer will it be before Live 2002 will be out ?

2.0 out of 5 stars Horrible, just horrible, April 5, 2001

The only reason why I purchased PS2 over the Dreamcast is because EA Sports only writes games for Playstation. And I usually love EA Sports games, but this game is just horrible. I cannot believe that the same company that developed Madden would associate their name with this product.

First the positives: 1.) As usual the graphics are pretty good and 2.) the stadiums are customed to the team. 3.) The game play is challenging which could make for fun games. 4.) The one-on-one mode is great and features many of the all time greats.

Now the negatives: 1.) I don't believe there is no franchise mode. That is just a terrible decision not to include the franchise option. 2.) The court is too small, whenever you spin or do a cross over move you go out of bounds or nearly go out of bounds. 3.) And on that note the game play is not very realistic. As just stated the cross over and spin moves are too wide. Also in the post you can't back anyone down (they don't move) and the post moves are not very good (no drop step). 4.) The shooting is terrible, although in the 2000 version it was too easy to hit a shot, in this version of the game it is way too difficult. Jump shots from 10-15 feet nearly never go in. 5.) Also it is too difficult to get a rebound. Your player can be right next to the ball and not grab it, while the computer's men all converge on the ball. 6.) Sometimes the game does not want to let you dunk when you have an open lane to the basket or on a fast break. You stop and take a short jump shot, and half the time you miss. 7.) The menu operations are completely different than other EA Sports games (they need some uniformity).

I recommend that you do not purchase this game. EA Sports should be ashamed of this game and should go back to the drawing board.

1.0 out of 5 stars NBA LIVE SEEMS RUSHED, February 3, 2001

First of all I would like to say I played every single NBA Live Product ever made. and I think NBA LIVE products were far better than any other wannabe basketball game.

Having said that, NBA LIVE 2001 was grossly hype-up and came about as a pure disappointment. Some of the things I found made me feel the game was rushed to meet deadlines.

1. You can't even do multiple player trades and with single tradingyou can even trade shaq for eddie jones. The trading ....

2. The graphics are ok, but can be a lot better. FIrst impression you will get is that the gameplay is smooth but bland in nature. NO DETAILS.

3. You can't have a career mode.

FInal Comments This is a game for people who have ... dollars to burn and tend to collect games for the PS2 just because it looks cool next to the system. Other than that, I consider this game an unplayable game which lack quality, gameplay, graphics. I am a hardcore Bball game fan.

1.0 out of 5 stars NBA LIVE 2001 for Playstation 2 is a disgrace to the series, January 30, 2001
By

After years of slow progress the nba live series has actually managed to take a giant leap backwards. There are so many flaws with this game I couldn't possibly name them all. First of all there is no franchise mode. This is the seventh game of the series and there still is no franchise mode. That's just lame. On top of that huge mistake there are tons of little mistakes that really ruin this game. No three point contest, No challenge mode like the ps1 has, No multi-player trades (that means no trading two players for one), No big increase in graphics, horrible gameplay flaws,(computer animations that run to long, crossover, spin move, don't do any of these moves around the sidelines, its a sure way to give the other team the ball), and finally no past championship teams like the 91 bulls or 94 rockets, or any of the great 80's teams.

In conclusion don't buy this game its a waste of money. If you can't wait for a b-ball game buy nba live for playstation 1. Im hoping next years live will be way better. But I have definetly lost some faith in ea sports and the nba live series. Im going to have to start doing something I thought I would never have to do with an ea sports game, rent before I buy.
