Editorial Reviews

It's hard to go wrong with Fela Kuti's work from the 1970s, and LIVE!, which features the Afrobeat innovator backed by his powerhouse band Africa '70 and ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker, is no exception. Like all of Fela's recordings from the era, LIVE! consists of just a few tracks, each of which approximates or exceeds the ten minute mark. Yet the arrangements are so dynamic on these tracks, the criss-crossing polyrhythms so absorbing, and Fela's incantatory vocals so entrancing that the long running times never seem a factor. Every cut crackles from beginning to end with its mixture of funk, jazz, and traditional Nigerian music, underscoring once again Fela's revolutionary, indelible contribution to world music.

Wow, Fela has a lot of great records. This one is my favorite. These guys cut a crazy groove. Love the soloing: funky, spacey.. brilliant. The percussion is amazing too. Get this record.

I brought this CD after watching the DVD Beware Of Mr. Baker. Fela kuti is an electrifying performer with lots of great rhythms and some great horns that really get the music moving. I had expected the album to feature more of Ginger Baker but he actually only plays on the last 2 songs of the album plus an added bonus track from 8 years later that is a 10 min drum solo. However the music is of such a high standard you don't worry too much of that detail.
Great African rhythms, great music and some brief great moments from Ginger Baker thrown in.

I found a cassette tape of this record in a shop in Peru, of all places. I first popped it in on a long bus ride through the Peruvian countryside. My first exposure to Fela, I was absolutely hooked. I now have dozens of his albums, and this is still my favorite. You can't help but move listening to it. If you're looking for a place to investigate Fela's music, start here - you won't regret it.

Great album. Fela and his Africa '70 band introduced the world to afrobeat. Ginger Baker is, well....Ginger Baker. Put the two together and magic happens. If you are unfamiliar with Fela, this great live recording is as good a place as anywhere to start.

I recently saw a documentary about Ginger Baker and I also knew he was in Lagos in the early 1970's. I knew this because of Paul McCartney playing in EMI studios in Lagos recording Band on the Run. But I never realized that Ginger Baker was hanging with Fela Kuhti. However, once I learned of this I saw this record and took the plunge.

For those that don't know, the late Kuhti is a terrific African musician that really brought consciousness of mixing politics with funk soul and African rhythms to a diverse audience. This record really brings a feeling to a live recording as the solid mixture of Ginger Baker with Fela is just plain great. You won't hear lots and lots of Ginger Baker solos, but the whole stew is well worth listening to over and over. The music is infectious and great and this is an enjoyable listen. Well worth the purchase!

For Ginger Baker fans and Fela Kuti fans alike, this is a must. From 1970, Probably not too long after Blind Faith ending. We get to hear Fela Kuti's grooves with the added punch of Ginger sitiing in on drums with Tony Allen. Ginger is on 3 of the 5 tracks. Ginger Baker has always been somewhat African based in his percussion style from early on (see "Beware Mr. Baker") and here he fits in seemlessly, to my ears anyway. And here I like the mix of Fela's tunes, with one written just for Ginger. This CD is offered at a good price and is well worth the listen.
