I am old enough to have been around when "The Book of Invasions" was released, way back then. The same can be said about "The Tain". Great records in themselves. However, Horslips releases were not widely circulated in Canada at the time and I lost track of what the band were doing over the subsequent years. I was intrigued when I stumbled on this cd by pure accident and decided to "give it a try" just to see (hear !).
"Horslips and the Ulster Orchestra at the Waterfront, Belfast" is a GREAT record. The band members have grown older - and Eamon Carr is replaced by a guest drummer ; musicianship is still there even if the voices have not aged for the better. There are instances when the timing is a bit off. There are the overall glitches one expects from a live recording. But all this doesn't matter at all. The material, selected from the aforementionned albums, brings tears to the eye, the orchestration by Brian Byrne are superb and tasteful - as if it had always been meant to be played this way. It was St.Patrick's Day ; it was an Irish band playing in Belfast ; it was a unique performance captured as a snapshot... It is just great ! One can feel the emotion.
Five stars even if it is not the greatest achievement, both musically and vocally. Five stars because it is GREAT FUN, the way one wants to feel when attending a concert. Five stars because it DOES make you wish you had been there at the Waterfront Hall on that evening.

The band sometimes credited with kick-starting Irish rock music in the '70's are back to conquer your musical soul. And they've brought reinforcements!

In their heyday, Horslips got critical flack for their Irish folk/progressive rock fusion-- a Rolling Stone critic described their use of traditional melodies with rock arrangements as "inappropriately dirty." At its best, their music is powerful, beautiful and the lyrics have a lot of depth and color. If they weren't so successful at their art, you'd call them "pretentious," but "ambitious" is a more apt description. Aided by the Ulster Orchestra, their tales of ancient Irish myth, magic and battle are truly widescreen epics but they are neither heavy metal mayhem nor PBS fundraiser music. The more modern songs about working class struggles fare pretty well also and the orchestra frequently recedes to allow Johnny Fean's blazing guitar work or one of the three singers to be the main focus. Jim Lockhart's keyboard and wind instruments are another key feature.

If you already know this remarkable band, you'll find this recording an enjoyable alternative to the original studio albums. Fans of alternative music, Ire-rock, and progressive rock should investigate this one. Sound quality of the digital download version is good to very good.

Been a fan since the beginning and am happy with the recent releases after a long "retirement". The orchestra sounds great as does the band. Whole the vocals are not what they used to be - whose can after all these years - they are perfectly acceptable and I am happy to have bought this.
