2.0 out of 5 stars "You Gotta Be Greedy!"
The first chapter of this preachy book would more aptly be entitled "The Incredible Ego of Les Brown". Although the writing style is good, seldom in my experience has the obvious been stated so boastfully, as though it were a revelation.

One wonders how anyone would benefit from Mr. Brown's self aggrandizing anecdotes, though they are mildly entertaining.

This is a great book for anyone who is feeling down or unmotivated and need a good boost. I've read many motivational books, this is probably the best one. Les Brown is not only a talented speaker but a very good writer as well. You won't be bored for a second while reading this book. What makes it an interesting read is that he always incorporate some of his personal stories with each lesson he preaches.

Here are some memorable teachings I treasure:

-Always set goals. For today. For this week. For this month. For 3 months. For this year. For 5 years...

-The only thing that can really stop you from living your dreams is you.

-Whatever you have done up to this point is a reflection of what you believe you deserve and what you believe is possible for your life.

-People with limited visions of themselves can not possibly have a larger vision of you.

-Don't operate on the basis of what you see. Operate on the basis of the possibilities you envisioned.

I saved the best ones for last:

-Rule #1: Don't sweat the small stuff, Rule #2: It is all small stuff

-More important than anything else is the choice of our attitude. Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

-In the end, it is the person you become not the things you achieve, that is most important.

4.0 out of 5 stars LIVE YOUR DREAMS - Les Brown, January 22, 2000
This review is from: Live Your Dreams (Paperback)
Whether by the written word, by voice (audio tape), video, or live presentation, few people can truly stir the human spirit to action in the maner that only Les Brown can do. Some people may truly get his message the first read - I don't care if I must read it over and over the rest of my life ... may I never get enough, and I wish the same for the next reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars if you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it..., June 2, 2005
This review is from: Live Your Dreams (Paperback)
this book was outstanding when les first handed it (signed) to me back at a motivational speaking/business seminar many many years ago that i was also speaking at...and it is just as grande and effective now. the ditty 'if you want a thing bad enough...' became a personal motto. i have learned to 'be unreasonable' in my expectations of myself...knowing that 'no matter how many times life knocks you down...if you can look up, you can get up!' i managed at 35 to get into the army, and then to surpass not only what was expected of my age group in fitness (APFTs)...but also of better than half of those 10 years my junior! it has very much become this soldiers credo...and too now is effecting others as i continue to preach it.
i would highly recommend this book to just about anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good News for Modern Man, September 29, 2004
This review is from: Live Your Dreams (Paperback)
Les Brown is a great motivator. His writing style is easy to read and right to the point. Les has an interesting background, coming from poverty and literally pulling himself up by the bootstraps to achieve success as a state legislature, disc jockey, and motivational speaker/writer.

Les wraps each of his lessons into stories of actual people who have demonstrated the feasibility of his theories for success. His message throughout is to "take control of your life," and "say Yes to life." This book was written in 1992 but is timeless. His stories and lessons are not specific to any industry, business, or religious beliefs, and would be suitable for any reader--young adults included.

You may also want to read "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth" by Phillip Collinsworth.

5.0 out of 5 stars The key is ..., January 1, 2000
This review is from: Live Your Dreams (Paperback)
A remarkably inspiring book by a most interesting and charismatic man. He is famous as a motivational speaker and literally mesmerizes his audiences. When asked how his book differed from other self-help books on the market he replied, "I tell people that changing your life is hard. And rarely do I hear people saying that."* He declares, "The key is: you don't get in life what you want; you get in life what you are." *(Science of Mind Magazine, Feb 1994, personal interview, pg 36)

5.0 out of 5 stars John Nuzzolese, President of The Landlord Protection Agency, March 19, 2007
This review is from: Live Your Dreams (Paperback)
I first saw Les Brown on PBS television while he was giving a motivational seminar. I couldn't change the channel. He was so good. So motivating and fun to listen to, I just had to hear every word he had to say.
When I saw his book, "Live your Dreams" in the bookstore, I knew I had to buy it. It was a great investment.
The book is entertaining, honest, extremely enlightening and of course, motivational. I enjoy this book so much that I can't recommend it enough. Anyone who wants to go against the odds and be successful in life will need the right motivation and attitude. Les Brown's "Live your Dreams" gives you that much needed boost in moral support.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Motivator, July 14, 2011
This review is from: Live Your Dreams (Paperback)
I really don't know where to start on this book. When I first read this almost 15 years ago, I was going through a divorce. This book helped me to pull myself together to compete in the work force with individuals who were more educated than myself but I beleived in myself from the principles in this book. Fastword and I am so glad that it's still around. I have purchased copies for graduation gifts, etc. and it has been I am sure a motivator for my children to succeed in life. Education is a key to a lot of things but education is not always within the classroom. Not letting anyone define you was the greatest lesson I learned. Educating one self on any topic is easy to do now with all the sources yet many fail to take advantage of it. I like all the catch phrases as my favorite is being "HUNGRY" for what you want. I've used it often to motivate doctors and teachers that I assisted. Only recently after re-reading this book have I decided it's time for me to motivate myself instead of all those around me. I've had the ability but just realized it. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to stop with the pity party or if you just want something to have to say to motivate someone else. Great tips and truly it will help you LIVE YOUR DREAM and you can add any tag line to what that is. With so many out of work..it's a great gift to give to encourage them to look for something new.

My greatest dream was to be a great MOM and I have done that according to my children. I did not settle because I did not allow the divorce to be the end of me. GREAT READ

5.0 out of 5 stars The Genius of Les Brown, April 15, 2009
This review is from: Live Your Dreams (Paperback)
It is this book that caused me to recognize - really recognize - Les Brown as someone to learn from and emulate. I had been familiar with him for years because of my own self-help studies. This book captivated me from page one. His writing style makes it impossible to ignore him. What is so clearly more important is his message that you can begin literally anywhere on your life's path - no matter how far down the ladder you are - and kick yourself into another gear to begin an upward climb. His genius came to mind while writing my own book, The Genius of Great Achievers: How You Can Accomplish the Impossible. Les Brown appears on page 32.
