Biography

“I revere the Duke, but I didn’t want to make a reverent album”, Joe Jackson says of The Duke, his new tribute to jazz legend Duke Ellington.

The Duke is indeed an unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his compositions while showcasing Jackson’s skills as arranger, instrumentalist and singer. Though it’s his second ... Read more in Amazon's Joe Jackson Store

Product Description

2009 two CD set. Joe Jackson was one of the pioneers of the leading British-based artists that brought a New Wave sound to the world in the late '70s. This compilation of recordings is taken from the BBC s archives, who caught a snapshot of the artist at the start of his career and charted his phenomenal rise to success. Recorded between 1979 and 1983, this collection contains 32 live recordings including Is She Really Going Out With Him Steppin Out , Real Men , Breaking Us In Two and It s Different For Girls . Certainly, Joe Jackson in his prime! Universal.

I'mm sure the other reviewers have mentioned many aspects of this fine 2 cd set capturing shows in 4 different BBC broadcasts. I will say that if you are JJ fan - you need this. I have never heard the band or Joe sound this "hungry"; the energy generated during these performances is amazing and the band is very tight. Joe gives the band room for some solos and if you see songs repeated chances are they aren't played the same way twice. Joe and his band were climbing the ladder at this point just before their peak popularity. Truly a great live performer that should be even more appreciated today in the face of bland American Idol performances that play it safe and much of today's formulaic top 40 bands. Joe plays to the audience and incites them to be part of the show; the band ignites, smolders and catches fire at all the right times. This is as good or better than the Live 80-83 cd because it's just a bit more raw, fiery and personable than the earlier live release. Joe's five for five among the reviewers - what more can I say?

This 2 Cd release seemed to get no fanfare at all and was a complete surprise to me that such a collection has appeared. Simply a very good collection of BBC live recordings from the early period of Joe's career. Excellent audio quality with liner notes that are rather basic. Joe Jackson fans should grabbed this one. Hopefully, more live recordings and rarities from Joe Jackson vaults will follow.

I guess about 15-20 years ago I just kind of stopped listening to Joe Jackson. I was a big fan from the first album. Even bought the 2 10" vinyl version of "Look Sharp" because it looked so damned sharp. Went to the concerts, bought all the releases but after "Big World" (which I love and is still one of my favorite tours of his) he just kind of left my radar.

I don't know how I even found out about this CD but I'm glad I did. It is amazing from the first note to the last! The band is on fire and even though the songs are from 4 different years and there are some songs repeated, it isn't at all like the "Live 1980/86" which, although has great moments, doesn't flow like this double disc set. You could listen to this whole thing and might not even notice some songs repeating (because they are that good and they are, for the most part, different styles).

If you are a fan, especially of the first 5 albums then this is a must have for your collection!

I have been a long time fan of Joe Jackson. This is a really good live collection of his work. There were some songs that I have never heard (Friday, Tuxedo Junction, and others) before but they are all good. The only song that I was disappointed in was "Another World." I have heard several versions of this (the best one is on Two Rainy Nights)and this one was off. Other than that one song (32 in all)this is an outstanding collection. I have never seen him in concert but it sounds like he is having fun and puts on a great show!

Joe Jackson loves to mess with his audience. Over the years he has been New Wave rocker, contemporary classical composer, tackled Swing and returned to his roots to reinvent himself.

This two disc set features the survival BBC taped performances that Jackson did over the years.

Disc One:

The first tracks "One More Time", "Got The Time", "Fools in Love" and "I'm The Man" are from Jackson and his band appearing on the John Peel Show Feb. 1979. It's a bit odd that these weren't licesned for the 2001 remastered deluxe edition of "Look Sharp!".

"Look Sharp", "Cancer", "Real Men", "Breaking Us in Two", "Fools in Love". "Chinatown", "Target", "T.V. Age", "It's Different for Girls", "Tuxedo Junction" and "Steppin' Out" are all from a concert appearance are from the October 1982 Hammersmith Odeon concert.

Disc Two:

Strangely enough the first show on disc two is from Hatfield Polytech January 1980 before the second part of disc one. Jackson performed "Sunday Papers", "One More Time", "Friday", "It's Different for Girls", "Don't Wanna Be Like That", "Happy Loving Couples", "I'm The Man", "Got The Time", "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" and "Come On".

The rest of the disc is filled out with a January 1983 show featuring "On YOur Radio", "Another World", "Sunday Papers", "Look Sharp", "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" (the doo-wop arrangement that also appeared on his double live album), "Steppin' Out" and closes with "A Slow Song".

The booklet has solid sleeve notes discussing Jackson's appearances on the BBC and his recording career. I'm not sure who did the mastering but this does sound pretty good.

Although not as extensive as many other BBC sets, Jackson's 2 disc set is essential for fans with energetic, riveting performances of his various songs.

Recommended.

This is partly a nostalgic review. My apologies to the public!
I've had this double CD in my possession for only a few hours and it has already been greatly testing my loudspeakers. Way back in 1980, I dangled a mono cassette recorder microphone over the mono speaker of a TV and recorded my first experience of Joe Jackson. Rock Goes to College, BBC, from Hatfield Polytechnic. Raucous playing, pungent lyrics with a hint of defiant melancholy, brilliant musicianship...that is Joe Jackson and his band: Dave Houghton (drums), Gary Sanford (guitar), and Graham Maby (bass). Over 30 years later, I have just discovered that the BBC has made this concert available on this double CD together with other Jackson BBC recordings, including the later Sight and Sound concert (which I also recorded in a slightly more sophisticated manner!)

What you get in this set is 75% live performance -- to the best of my recollections, all of the Rock Goes To College and the Sight and Sound concerts together with another live performance and some studio work from the John Peel show. All this stuff dates from the late 1970s - 1980s.
The recording quality is excellent. As said, that Hatfield concert is raucous and full of energy -- the 4-piece band gives a tremendous account if itself.
Graham Maby is, in my opinion, one of the most magnificent bass players around and he does for Joe Jackson what the late John Entwhistle did for The Who.
The later Jackson has more depth in the sense that it is more synthesized, with a bigger band, additional percussion etc, and displays Jackson's skill at rendering his songs in different ways. Perhaps in these renditions, raw power is tempered by more sophistication -- but nevertheless still leaves its mark on the listener.
