Biography

Steve Earle had two reasons for coming out with this long-planned tribute to Townes Van Zandt now. The first reason is practical. Earle is currently pushing himself to finish a years-in-the-making novel, and he wants to see it in print before the publishing business goes belly up.

The second is a more personal concern. Like all artists worthy of the name, Steve Earle loves the truth, and in the… Read more in Amazon's Steve Earle Store

About the Artist

Steve Earle - Live At The BBC finds the roots rocker at one of his favorite U.K. venues, the Town & Country Club in London, on November 29, 1988. In front of an enthusiastic audience, Earle performed several tracks from Copperhead Road a month before the album's release, including the title track, "Snake Oil," "Even When I'm Blue," "Devil's Right Hand" and "Johnny Come Lately," about an American soldier in wartime London. From his first two albums are "San Antonio Girl," "My Old Friend The Blues," "Someday," "Down The Road" and "Little Rock N Roller." Along with a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers," rarities are the traditional Brit-folk "When Will We Be Married?" and Earle's own "My Baby Worships Me," both previously unrecorded by him at the time. The concert was originally issued only in the U.K. as Steve Earle - BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert in 1992. Steve Earle - Live At The BBC adds four bonus tracks recorded live for the Beeb in Manchester, England on April 16, 1987: "Fearless Heart," "Good Ole Boy (Getting Tough)" and "Hillbilly Highway" from his Guitar Town debut and "I Love You Too Much" from the follow-up, Exit 0.

Product Description

Steve Earle, one of music's most respected and rebellious artists, a roots rocker with country flavor, emerged from Texas in the mid-`80s with a series of landmark albums, and a reputation for delivering on the stage. Now, following the celebration of the 20th anniversary of 1988's Copperhead Road, which received the Deluxe Edition treatment in 2008, comes a collection of his BBC Recordings from two incredible performances with The Dukes, covering much of the material from Copperhead Road, and which were broadcast on the BBC in 1988 and 1989.

75 Minutes of Previously Unreleased Classic '80s Steve Earle & The Dukes. Includes Live Versions of His Trademarks "The Devil's Right Hand," "Copperhead Road," & "Good Ol' Boy(Gettin' Tough)". Rare Live Performances of Traditional Brit-Folk Song "When Will We Be Married" and Earle's Own "My Baby Worships Me". Cover of the Rollling Stones' "Dead Flowers".

5.0 out of 5 stars country? rock? who cares!, March 12, 2009

Along with Charlie Pickett and the Eggs, Steve Earle and the Dukes are America's fogotten rock heroes of the mid- to late 80s. Recorded a month before the release of Earle's rock masterpiece "Copperhead Road", in London's Town and Country Club before a beer-boosted crowd, this classic recording captures Earle and the Dukes at their raspy, raunchy best. Bucky Baxter's playing on pedal steel is amazing-- as touching as Ben Keith's work with Neil Young. The momentum on this thing builds like a freight train-- you're gonna' wanna be on board. I've been going to Steve Earle's Philly shows since the mid 80s when "Guitar Town" came out-- this CD brings all those amazing memories flooding back. If you love country... if you love rock N' roll... this is the real deal!

3.0 out of 5 stars The band sounds great, Steve not so much., November 16, 2009

I'm a big fan of Steve Earle and the Dukes and I had the good fortune to see them during this tour. I looked at the song listings and bought it on the spot. Let me caution against doing that. Take advantage of the ability to sample each track on Amazon. The band sounds really tight, but Steve has a scratchy voice. He is obviously trying hard, but for the majority of these cuts his voice is just not up to snuff. I doubt that Steve would have approved of releasing this recording. It is probably another attempt of his former label to make the last bucks they can make on the "old" Steve Earle recordings. I would endorse The Austin City "live" set or the previously released live CD "Shut Up ..." Be cautious and investigate before you pay too much for this recording.

OK, I'll admit up front that I'm a huge Steve Earle fan, having purchased most, if not all, of his CDs. I've seen him live a couple of times, and will see him again if given the chance. This is an excellent CD of his early music, recorded live in England in 1987 and 1988. His interaction with the audience, and its appreciation of him, is palpable and brings out his best. The recording is clean and clear, with excellent acoustics, like other BBC recordings.

If you have any interest in Steve Earle, or alt-country/americana, at all, purchase this CD.
