Editorial Reviews

2011 two CD release, a collection of tracks taken from the BBC owned Lizzy recordings that still exist in the archive and charts the inexorable rise of the band: from the first steps as a three piece on the Decca label, to the glory days as one of the greatest live acts of all time. This collection brings together sessions and live recordings from throughout the band's career including the last concert with Phil Lynott from the Reading festival in 1983. Universal.

This box set, it rules. The only gripes I really have are that of a few missing things, or things that should have been included. The Hammersmith 81 show is missing Don't Believe A Word. I have a great radio recording of this show and it was a fine performance. Shame it's not included. The Regal 83 gig, which is a bonus show on the Live And Dangerous DVD is featured here along with the audio with extra tracks from the show, as well as the Rainbow 78 gig which is in fact the Live And Dangerous DVD. The only gripe is Cowboy Song? It's out there, I've seen it. Why not include it in here? Many of the recordings have already been previously released in some form or fashion or have been floating around as bootlegs, but there are a multitude of rarities contained in this set that only the hardest of hardcore Lizzy fans may have seen or heard of, or even known of their existence. And just to point this out, this set is not a victim to the loudness war. Yipee! They could have thrown some more television appearances on the DVD but eh. I can't complain. How many box sets have we the fans endured where there was so much much potential squandered? I am absolutely delighted to say that in this case, we got every penny's worth! While I would have loved the inclusion of the BBC's broadcast of the Reading festival, now long out of print, I can't find fault with this voluminous history of one of rock's most important contributors......

In this set you'll find ALL of the available BBC studio tracks meticulously remastered for digital.... this set would have been completely out of reach for fans had they taken this set analog onto vinyl.... though I for one would have spent ANY amount for a vinyl set....These sessions have sat on their original reels, untouched, for decades and you can feel ALL the love applied by the crew who undoubtedly spent months bringing these recordings back from the dead and given a new lease on life. While most fans, both casual and long term, are far more familiar with material from Vagabonds to their final studio release Thunder and lighting, this set gives us EVERYTHING back to '71. This serves an important reminder that Lizzy were contemporaries of Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Mott the Hoople, David Bowie, and Aerosmith ... Pioneers of the twin guitar sound which many bands would try to copy but seldom match the sound delivered by the tandems of Gorham/Robertson, Gorham/Moore, Gorham/Ure, Gorham/White, and Gorham/Sykes.

The live shows are proof that what we heard in the studio was indeed for real....The DVD is visual proof of their dazzling talent.

Universal have been treating Thin Lizzy fans to some nice releases this year, despite a majority of them being sold only in Europe. Deluxe editions of Jailbreak, Johnny the Fox, and various other have been released this year. Also, a reunited version of the band has been touring this year. Why all these releases? It may have to do with the fact that earlier in January of this year marked 25 years since bassist and singer Phil Lynott passed away. Recently, Universal has offered another release and this one is pretty neat: it's a collection of recordings the band did for the BBC since the beginning of their career till their farewell tour in 1983. Universal have offered two versions of this release, a two-disc version and an astounding six-disc plus one DVD version. In this review, I'll be going into the two disc version. The album, At the BBC, is an impressive selection of highlights from the main box set. What makes this release unique is that as years go by, the BBC may choose to erase their older tapes. Luckily, many have been kept by the BBC and of course, the fans. I know there are many readers who might only know Thin Lizzy for "The Boys Are Back in Town" and "Jailbreak". Although they weren't very popular in the US, Thin Lizzy are so much more than just one or two songs. To consider them as a "one-hit wonder" is laughable.
The first disc consists on recordings from 1971 to 1974. During this time, Thin Lizzy were just a three-piece band and weren't exactly the hard-rocking four-piece that would make them popular. The early Thin Lizzy music is rock music but much more folk rock, celtic rock, and sometimes hard rock. During these years, the band consisted of Lynott, drummer Brian Downey, and guitarist Eric Bell. Personally, I like the tracks that were recorded with BBC DJ John Peel.
