Better Than Ever,
By Clara Bo (La Jolla, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live at Billy Bob's Texas (Audio CD)
Earl's voice is like wine--the more it ages, the better it gets.
These songs are too. Earl's "Somewhere Between Right And Wrong" and Gloria Nissenson's and Elaine Lifton's "Heavenly Bodies" span the spectrum of fabulous. Earl sings with warmth, humor, fun and heartache.Loved him then, love him now---

Wonderful music, less than perfect delivery,

I've got to be one of Earl's biggest fans and absolutely love every song on this set, but it is fair to say that his voice is not what it once was. You can here him strain a bit to hit the notes in most songs.
I will say one interesting track on the CD, though, is "What I'd Say." It was probably out of necessity, but the track is lowered a key, and I feel this gives it a bit darker of a feel than even the original recording. The other song worth noting is "I Can't Win For Losin' You," as it's cut a verse shorter than the original, but has a pretty cool intrumental outro that closes his shows. I personally love this CD as a way to commemorate the concerts I've seen him in recently. However, if you're looking for a sound just like the original recordings, you may be a bit disappointed.

Energetic show. Earl's voice not like on record.,

Don't be too hard on ETC for his mildly disappointing vocals on this otherwise energetic live set. I recall hearing something years ago about him suffering from vocal problems. Don't know if it was a medical problem, or just overuse over the years. I'm listening to this CD right now, and it's good. And, of course, it IS live, afterall. A little personal story...I work in radio. In 1984, ETC came to a big nightclub in Corpus Christi Texas where I was working at the time. Our Program Director was standing out back with Earl by his tour bus. I went out there and met him. He asked me to hand him his guitar when he came in and went on stage. I put the strap over his head when he came in. Fond memory. I'll never criticize Earl Thomas Conley. He's one of the all time greats. And I'm thrilled I finally found a live CD, after all these years. Thanks Amazon.
