Bring It Back!, June 18, 2009
This review is from: Live at Cuesta College (Audio CD)
To many fans of the music of David Crosby, this 2 CD set from the trio of: Crosby, Jeff Pevar (guitars, vocals) and James Raymond (keyboards, vocals) marks the begining of a great musicial journey.
This night of music, from a 12 date tour of January 1997, was recorded in San Luis Obispo, California. David, had not yet recorded the CPR album, and the audience was hearing a lot of this music for the very first time. With CSN favorites: "Wooden Ships" & "Deja Vu" performed in radically different arrangements, CPR breathes new life into some old favorites here. Powerful new tunes: "Morrison" & "Rusty & Blue" spotlight a mature jazz direction that would win CPR much critical acclaim, with the release of CPR's first two studio albums.
The playing of Jeff Pevar & James Raynond, are the cornerstone of this recording. Both musicians are masters of their instruments. The solos that are featured are never overplayed or tedious. The piano solo in the middle of Deja Vu, is nothing short of majestic.
David Crosby, rises up on this tour. Inspired by Jeff and James, he can roar as the best of the rockers: "Thousand Roads" or sound like a choirboy: "Guinnevere."
For fans of David Crosby, this live set is must-have CD of one of David's greatest concert experiences. For the rest of the folks, this is an introduction to one of the finest bands of the last ten years.
This is an excellent disc to own, and I wish it would be re-released in the near future.
These old-timers, have aged well!
