Biography

Stephen Peter Marriott formed the Small Faces with Ronnie Lane in 1965 and together with Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan made four years of amphetamine-fuelled R&B and Cockney music-hall psych, never quite making it in the U.S. except for "Itchycoo Park," but becoming Mod icons and godfathers of Britpop through domestic hits like "Tin Soldier," "What'cha Gonna Do About It," and "Lazy Sunday" along… Read more in Amazon's Steve Marriott Store

3.0 out of 5 stars A Magic Night at Dingwalls!, July 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Live at Dingwalls (Audio CD)
Steve Marriott and his rhythm section - Jim Leverton: Bass Fallon: Drums (Or, as they are 'delicately named': Packet-of-3)

From beginning to end, this is pure MARRIOTT! Wailing, soulful, vocals that haven't lost their salt and grit, coupled with wonderful fretwork, pounding bass and drums, this CD is a must have.

For those who yearn for the original SMALL FACES (pre Rod & Woody) and HUMBLE PIE, Mr. Marriott and company give a fresh approach to such chestnuts as 'WHAT'CHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT' and a wonderful working of ALL OR NOTHING (including spontanious audience participation) from the FACES and 'THE FIXER', 'THIRTY DAYS IN THE HOLE', and stomping 'I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR' from the PIE.

Other cuts of note, a deep, bluesy, rendition of Eddie Boyd's 'FIVE LONG YEARS', and interesting reworkings of Creedence Clearwater Revival's: 'BAD MOON RISING', and Elvis Presley's 'ALL SHOOK UP'.

Originally released by GUITAR RECORDINGS on the RED label, this CD is certa! in to please those of you (and you know who you are) that have fond memories of 'ITCHYCOO PARK' to 'ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE'.

4.0 out of 5 stars SMALL FACE -BIG TALENT-SADLY MISSED., December 8, 2001
This review is from: Live at Dingwalls (Audio CD)
The rock world was,as it has been too many times in the past, robbed of one hellava fella(or geezer as i suppose steve would have put it)in april 1991 when he died in a fire at his home at the age of 44.One of my earliest recollections of marriott's music was the legendary OGDENS NUT GONE FLAKE in its round sleeve.I remember debating with my brother which lp to buy with our pooled pocket money.I favoured FOREVER CHANGES by LOVE and he the aforementioned OGDEN'S.He won he was older than me,and i suppose,im glad that he did as it is a fine piece of work .Rock and roll laced with humour. As prime mover in the SMALL FACES and later in the excellant HUMBLE PIE, MARRIOTT was the cockney rocker with the raw, gutsy white soul voice and a nifty guitarist to boot.
This live set from 1984 serves as a fine testament to the man and is worth the entrance fee alone for his phenominal, bluesy reading of CREEDENCES' BAD MOON RISING where he rips into the song with a passionate intensity that wipes all trace of the original away and along with superlative treatments of ALL OR NOTHING,FIVE LONG YEARS and many other gritty classics you feel that this must have been one hell of a gig to be present at.
Stunning!
(ps i did get FOREVER CHANGES eventually but thats another story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marriott was rockn'roll and this proves it!, February 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Live at Dingwalls (Audio CD)
Steve Marriott was the epitome of real rock and roll. He was never an act, he was the genuine article. On Dingwall's, he does with 3 bandmates what other band's only wish they could do, play real ballsy guitar blues based music the way it's meant to be played, from the gut. And in case you never heard Steve wail, no one could ever shout soul like Marriott, which makes listening to any other album after this a hard act to follow.
