4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the Donnington I was thinking of.
Here it is. For those of you who didn't get the limitededition two disc original, Steve and the boys have re-released it foryou with new packaging. Man, what a cover! Plus they've done right give you value for money with an enhance section of live performances that you can access with a computer. Look at all the stuff you get for a measly fifteen or eighteen bucks...

"Live At Donnington" is a good buy for anyone who wants to have the live tracks of these songs. But there are a couple problems with this album. First is the sound and production quality. I have a hard time experiencing the energy of the music. It sounds most of the time as though the bass is turned up just for the sake of being more prominent, and tends to bury the guitar sounds. Dave and Janick are a bit out of sync and don't feel very dynamic together.

In comparison, if you listen to "Live After Death" you will see how tight and dynamic the band plays as a unit.

The second problem with the album is the song selection. This album was recorded on the "Fear of the Dark" tour. That album, I think I can safely say, is the least liked Maiden album among long-time fans. (Excepting the Blaze Bayley albums.) This album has 5 Fear of the Dark songs. It practicaly skips the "Piece of Mind", "Powerslave" and "Somewhere In Time" with one song from each.

I will get almost anything from Maiden, but I can't help being a little diappointed with this. I would recommend "Live after Death" first; it's a must have. If you are trying to decide over whether to get "Live at Donnington" or "A Real Live Dead One", Donnington's still the better sounding and the track listing is almost identical.

Here it is. For those of you who didn't get the limitededition two disc original, Steve and the boys have re-released it foryou with new packaging. Man, what a cover! Plus they've done right give you value for money with an enhance section of live performances that you can access with a computer. Look at all the stuff you get for a measly fifteen or eighteen bucks! Wwwwwwwwaaaaaoooooowwwww! Now these guys have difinitely been here for nearly twenty years and it shows. First they packaged the "Best of the Beast" collection in a hardbound booklette that slides into a carrying case, and now they re-release the whole smourgesboard of backlogue! Thank you God! What a Band, eh?

Hear the crowd roar as "Be quick or Be Dead" opens a night of heavy metal magic. Overall the tracks are all from the Maiden classics list, but then again just about every song from them is a classic ! This band would struggle to put a set of songs together that no one liked very much because there are so few of them. Maybe not even ten in total, or less than five. In any case there is a lot more crowd in this release as Bruce talks to the audience more often than on the "Live After Death" release. You'll get your chance to "scream for me" for Bruce on plenty of occasions, in the comfort of your home/car. And if you listen to it from start to finish you'll be pleasantly surpirsed by the cameo appearance of a certain ex-cohort on the last tack. Also, on the last track, you'll get your chance to scream your approval of this excellent recording as Bruce asks, "Have you,....Have you all had a great time tonight?", and hear those ninety-thousand plus voices rise from the crowd to stamp their approval! Put your trousers on and buy this record! END

4.0 out of 5 stars Turn the bass down!!!!!, January 4, 2002
This review is from: Live at Donnington (Audio CD)
THis is a great live record with many maiden classics for you to enjoy(read the track listing). Some people argue that the production is not as good as the production for the "Live After Death " CD,but I thing they are dead wrong. If you are listening to this CD with the bass turned up really loud the Production seems a bit out of whack.Steve Harris must have wanted to make shure we could hear every note he played. If you just turn the bass down the production is every bit as good as "Live A.D." The only problem I have with Live Maiden records is most of them have the same songs .How many Versions of "Number of the Beast," "Two minutes to midnight," and "Wrathchild" do we really need? I wish they would change up some. Maybe play some songs off of the "Somewhere it Time" Album.I would really love to have a live version of the song "Alenxander the great" (who wouldent.) THis is a MUST HAVE for any maiden fan ...Put it in the cart.

This is a great CD !! I found my self lisening to this CD with the nobe turnd up to about half way . I found out some intrasting stuff about this CD . It turns out that 13 of the 16 songs on the Best Of The Beast Iron Maidon CD are on the live at Donington CD thats preaty cool i don't have the Live After Death CD 'YET' but i've been thinking about it and the only thing that gets in the way for geting it is that most and i mean MOST of the songs are already on the Live At Donington CD ..sooo .. i can't say that the Live At Donington CD is better but it sure is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars good but not the best, April 20, 2000
This review is from: Live at Donnington (Audio CD)
This one is a good show case of there tallent, but it was lacking the energy that live after death has. Bruce is not at his best in some of the old songs(run to the hills, number of the beast)and is sounding like he would rather play more new stuff.the best song on it is the clairvoyant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death To Posers, Up the Irons!, March 9, 2000
This review is from: Live at Donnington (Audio CD)
How in God's name did this not get the same rating as Live after Death! In my opion both "Donnignton" and "Live" demand nothing less than a five star rating, especially since they both showcase Maiden at different times in their careers! Well I gotta go I hear Cthulu callin' me. Peace. "That is not dead which can eternally lie. With strange eons even death may die." H.P. Lovecraft.

It's a tie between "live After Death" and Donnington. I have never heard Bruce sound better than this live. Steve and the boys bare there souls at this show. The audiance is incredible. Definatly a must for anyone, (even non-Maiden fans)

After releasing the Fear of the Dark album in 1992 Iron Maiden headlined once again the Donington show. This show was recorded that same year but "Live At Donington" during Maiden's Fear Of The Dark tour, but it was only released in November of 1993.This was to be Bruce Dickinson's final tour with Maiden wich can explain some its flaws.Yes this is not the greatest live album they've done I'll be the first to say that, the honor would have to go to 1984's "Live After Death" but it's still a very good show.Live at Donnington was re-released in 1998 on a double compact disc wich made it much easier to find, also to note is the album's artwork has been changed to the Donington poster used back in 1993 wich looks much better than the original plain white one they used.

There are some problems with the audio.Steve Harris's bass sounds too loud here, and it shouldn't.It makes me wonder if Steve did this on purpose to have his parts heard! The other thing is that while this doesn't always happen,Bruce sounds like he doesn't want to be there and dull. What could explain this is that at the time Bruce really wanted to be a solo artist and do his own things. He had previously released Tattooed Millionaire his first solo album back in the late 80's and now wanted to have a solo career full time wich is why he sometimes sounds that way,he had enough of Maiden and was about to leave.

On the good side Live At Donington has a great setlist, over 20 songs on two discs, the song choices are interresting. There are five songs from their last album(*FOTD at the time)who are all good. The live versions of "Fear Of The Dark" and " on this album might just be my favourite of all,"Be Quick Or Be Dead" opens the album with a bang! The crowd's reaction was quite positive."Afraid To Shoot Strangers" and "Wasting Love" are both very well done and it's nice to have some slower songs in the set. Some songs make their first appearance on a live Maiden album such as "Can I Play With Madness","The Clairvoyant" and "Heaven Can Wait"(the crowd really participates on that one at the end it' s great!)wich surprised me!Those ones I didn't expect to hear are there and they sound great.Along with all those are the regulars as "The Number Of The Beast"(the crowd even does the churchill intro by heart wich amazed me!),"Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "The Trooper" who are great as always.

The crowd participates on a lot of songs,"Two Minutes To Midnight","Heaven Can Wait" and "The Number Of The beast" are very good exemples and a couple others. At the end of the show Bruce asks the crowd if they liked the show and the reaponse was quite good. This show featured a lot of interaction with the crowd by Bruce wich is great to hear, its nice to hear the crowd give more life to the show but they don't overshadow the band,it sounds great.

Overral its not their best live album but it's a good one, don't expect too much and you'll like it.Its unfortunate that Maiden released two other live albums around the same time as this one, earlier and with many of the same songs wich makes this look less appealing. To its credit, this one sounds better than either of A Real Live One or A Real Dead One.It has some flaws but some high points too,If you are a fan I really think you should get this.Consider buying the 2002 remaster edition however, that version is just better.I'd say the album's strong point is the track listing, its far from being the best but its different and some tracks sound very good.I'm not disapointed by Live At Donington,in fact Im pleased with it,its a satisfying live album by one my favourite bands.

I find this live masterpiece to be quite awesome and up to the ranges with live after death. The crowd is soaringly awesome and the production i thought was very hot. Steve slapping the bass, Nickos loud hard drums pounding away, with bruce's siren wailing away. Dave and Jannick click excellently i think since dave is always a supreme fast guitarist as so is Jannick though he can go smoothly some too. I luv hearing him play smith's and stratton's parts, i think he does superb like on can i play with madness, the evil that men do, and im going to probably get cursed out for saying this but he actually plays the solo 2 minutes to midnite a whole lot better then smith, especially towards the end of the solo, just listen. His solos are excellent he plays the hell out of the guitar like its nothing and his solos have a very mean raw sound to them and it perfectly fits the maiden sound well. Though id have to agree, i wish they would play more tunes off no prayer like holy smoke, fates warning, and public enemy, but its still really enjoyable. I luv how u hear the crowd quote the bible verse on the # of the beast its awesome, and Jannick's short solo he made up on wrathchild is awesome it is in top form and this album is superb. I dont like to talk so much abt jannick only but i get tired of people talking bad about him. This is a top notch maiden album and heavy metal at its finest, enjoy. UP THE IRONS!
