Live is Live,
By Ronald Cid (Contreceour, Quibec Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live at Donte's (Audio CD)
I too, was initially taken back by the sound quality of this record, then I realized that it was recorded over 30 years ago, live, and by another one of my guitar heros, John Pisano on his reel to reel tape recorder. John knew the importance of Lenny and the break-through that he created on the guitar, and attempted to capture that initial "spirit" Yes there is crowd noise, and banter, but it also can be taken positively, as if you are "there" in the club witnessing this magic moment. I think that it should be pointed out that many artists of that era have live albums wherein the recordings are of poor quality...for instance many Charlie Parker recordings are 100 times worse that this (including the classic "Live at Massey Hall"...but we all still listen to Bird. This leads me to my point....it's not the recording that counts...it's the music, and the music played on this record is "chicken skin" music...man! Lenny could blow! In a day of sterile, antiseptic recordings by "lack luster" guitar players...give me this recording anytime! Ron

Not that bad at all,
By Eric L Grater (South Saint Paul, MN United States) - See all my reviews

The sound quality could be better on this recording. But given the fact that Lenny Breau was unquestionably a genius on the guitar, and lived only 42 short years,we should be thankful that these tapes were found, preserved, and made available.

I concur with the two previous reviews, "Live Is Live" and "Not That Bad At All" of this rare, live Lenny Breau gem. Formerly, Lenny's recordings were hard to find and ostensibly, there wasn't much recorded of him, but Chet Atkins said that Lenny was the most recorded player ever, as people would switch on tape recorders when Lenny picked up his guitar, for they knew he wasn't long for this world.
Yea, the recording quality of this rare, live find of Lenny's isn't top quality, but it doesn't matter. If you're into the meat and potatoes of the artistry here, which is top flight, smokin', virtuoso, visionary stuff, you'll not even notice the recording quality.

I agree with the previous review - Lenny was brilliant on this recoding (as usual) but the quality of recording is horrible...

Lenny deserves better,
By Stephen Whittaker (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews

Lively performance, typical Lenny Breau brilliance is marred by horrible recording quality. Ever listened to a cassette that you found under your car seat after months in the heat? Well, I wish the CD was that good.
