Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Tommy Castro is the kind of guy who makes you think, "hard-workin' man." There's no frills or flash on Live at the Fillmore, but one gets the sense that Castro could do that stuff if he wanted to--he just has the good taste to refrain. That's all right; as it is, Castro and his band are so hot, you can practically hear the music sweat. Judging by the song titles, which include "Lucky in Love," "Can't Keep a Good Man Down," and "Sex Machine," one might get the impression that Castro's got only one thing on his mind, but few musicians can approach the same topic in such a myriad of ways. Besides, Live at the Fillmore also includes a stunning version of the soul-blues ballad "Just a Man," which shows that Castro is as capable of tenderness as he is of full-throttle blues rock. Wholly satisfying. --Genevieve Williams

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
you can't separate the power of blues and the spirit of soul...and trust me, every lick of tommy's guitar and every shriek or whisper of his raspy soulful voice, will knock you off your feet, and if your booty ain't shaking by the end of the first track, i suggest you have cpr administered immeaditely...buy this cd...you wont regret it one second...better yet see the band live..you will walk away a firm believer...that they are the real deal

5.0 out of 5 stars Smokin'! August 31, 2000
By LennyD
Format:Audio CD
I had never had heard of Tommy before I picked this album up on a whim a couple of months back. Wow! This guy is what the blues are all about. I listen to a lot of different artists and this is one guy I can truly say has to be heard live...his studio stuff is good, but it lacks the power he displays live. Get this one...you'll not regret it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Groove, but lets not go overboard! March 16, 2000
Format:Audio CD
This is my first Tommy CD. I liked the built in interview on the CD, and he seems nice. His band has a nice groove, and tunes are good. He's not a guitar God, and his voice is average. His band is good. In my book this CD is that. It's good. It's not excellent. I didn't call anyone telling them they "Had to hear this CD". I thought his version of "Sex Machine" didn't really add much from the original James Brown version (another reviewer mentioned it). Tommy sounds like he's having fun, and it comes through on the CD. It's just not "Oh my God!" awesome, and if you're looking for the next Stevie Ray, keep lookin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kickin' Feel Good Boogie-Woogie Blues February 4, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Tommy Castro rocks. He sings like Delbert & plays guitar like Buddy & Stevie. If you listen to this in you car, be careful to watch your odometer because the uptempo boogie-woogie blues will have you speeding in no time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good at times, not great... April 9, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I really liked his last CD and was looking forward to a "live" version of some of his hits (since I really prefer live music recordings). This CD has its moments, but overall was pretty average. The slow tunes are too long (6+ mins.). And I can't believe he left off "My kind of Woman," one of the best songs on his last CD which would really rock in a live version. "Sex Machine" is too long with a bad/boring sax solo. I'll listen to this a lot probably, but I'm somewhat disappointed in overall content.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like my rock 'n' roll kickin' April 13, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Muddy Waters said "another mule been kickin' in your stall" (Long Distance Call).

It's all about the sexual tension between men and women - the life blood of rock 'n' roll.

This CD pulls and yanks that tension to amazing places with a heavy emphasis on the interrelationship of blues and R&B. As I'm writing I'm on my second listening to this CD and thinking, if it weren't for rock'n'roll and hockey, why are we here?

I cannot fathom why some reviewers have problems with this CD. Maybe they just don't get that the blues and R&B are innseparable.
