Product Description

8 countries enjoyed them!, The BBC awarded them its 2003 Americas World Music Award. Now, for the first time ever… LIVE, LIVE, LIVE, LIVE! The chicano power concert... live! This 2 cd set reviews the first decade of Los De Abajo’s musical history with amazing live energy, burning and political Latin fire. Recorded multi-track in downtown Los Angeles as part of the Grand Performance series this album will leave you dancing. Their upbeat latin, ska, funk, electro mixture is loco.

From the experts that have heard this, they claim it is the best live latin album ever released.

About the Artist

Springing out of Mexico City's increasingly fertile punk underground, Los de Abajo was formed by vocalist Liber Terán, guitarist Vladimir Garnica, bassist Carlos Cortez, saxophone player Damián Portugal and keyboardist Carlos Cuevas plus percussionist/drummers Yocupitzio Arellano and Gabriel Elias. Originally playing Latin ska, the group became increasingly political and punk-inspired during 1993-94. Los de Abajo recorded and released two cassette albums before being signed by Luaka Bop for their 1998 self-titled album and a release in 2002.

Meh.

I gotta say i was looking forward to listening to this double live cd album of Los de abajo especially since i enjoyed their studio albums but it was not so.

I found the live renditions for the most part pretty dull. I guess you'd have to be there live in the audience to REALLY experience the event.

And to top things off, the titles of the songs are not played on the CD as it is listed on the CD album cover. It gets to the point where you don't know what you're listening to unless of course you're a hardcore fan.

This is really more for the hardcore fans. Si.

Even though Los de Abajo's studio albums are enjoyable in themselves, thay have never quite captured the energy and joy of of Los de Abajo live. Los de Abajo is one of the great live bands of all time. This is an official bootleg of their 2004 gig in Los Angeles. The two-hour set is a rollercoaster ride of different influences: ska, punk, mariachi, Mexican folk music, funk & hip hop. Very uptempo, accelerates towards the end even further, and great fun. I saw the same set in Helsinki in 2004 & even the usually rather subdued Finnish audience was totally encaptivated from the very beginning. If you can't go and see Los de Abajo this is definitely the next best thing.

I bought this CD because the label Kufala put the first song Sr. Judas on a Sampler, free with a CD from Lettuce. This song starts with digital samples of human voices talking about freedom, intimacy and other theme's in Spanish, English, Dutch (!), German e.o.. Then the song starts, rap with a punky groove. It's very original, a mixture of rap, rock, salsa and ska. Also the other songs on the 2 live-CD's are alright, groovy latin music, but not as surprising and beautiful as the first song. I mean, nothing wrong with it, but "where did I hear this before?"

So if money is not the problem, buy it at least for the first song. I mean, when you're from Mexico-city, and you use samples of German, Flemish and other rare languages in a rhytmic way to make an intro, and it's beautiful and thrilling, you are creative!
