Well, today I just purchased this Record Store Day specialty which I missed this year at Grimey's in Nashville, TN. I have to say that Metallica are one of those bands that truly sound as good live as they do in the studio! The energy is incredible and if you've ever been to The Basement underneath Grimey's you know that there is not much room but, it's got tons of vibe for sure! Well, not only did Metallica deliver but, the song choices were amazing:
1. No Remorse from Kill 'Em All
2. Fuel from Reload
3. Harvester of Sorrow from ....And Justice For All
4. For Whom The Bell Tolls(including The Frayed Ends of Sanity "Jam" from Ride The Lightning/...And Justice For All
5. Master Of Puppets from Master Of Puppets
6. Sad But True from Metallica(the black album)
7. Motorbreath from Kill 'Em All
8. Seek And Destroy from Kill 'Em All

The mix is great and for fans this is a rare treat to hear them in a small club setting still shredding like they have been for over 3 decades!! Guys thanks for finally releasing this gem from 2008!!

Holy crap it is like you are sitting there in a folding chair floor level with a band that is trying to make it to the big time and they are just melting your face song after song after song. But wait !!! They did make the big time !!!

This is far beyond impressive, and the groove pocket these guys get into is so deep and hot, that you can see that as they " age " the best is yet to come from Metallica.

I witnessed this in 1982 in Portales, New Mexico as a student at ENMU, and saw them and Raven in a ballroom half full and just knew one day that they would be a force.

Well my amazon friends that force is here to stay. Hell look at Motorhead!!! I say that Motorhead and Metallica should hook up for a summer tour, that would be a bucket list check off for sure.

Thanks Lars, James, Kirk and Robert for making such a personal disc. Now back to wiping the sweat off my speakers!!!

Recorded at The Basement, a tiny club beneath Grimey's Record Store in Nashville one night prior to their Bonnaroo appearance, this is an indie promotion, initially available only at independent record stores. Oh, but its so much more than that, this is done right. This record consists of mostly older material, 3 songs from Kill `Em All, and only 2 from the 90s, and I don't think that's by accident. The songs chosen seem for maximum hard hitting, crunching effect without sacrificing subtlety completely. The feel or "vibe" however is what really makes this release special. It possesses an extreme, intimate live feel. James talks with individuals in the audience, and the banter back and forth between the band and fans is completely unusual and unexpected.

I'd like to hear more records like this one. This kick major a%$, no fan would be disappointed. Those who choose to complain about the sound are missing the point, the basement vibe. James exclaims, "there's a good vibe in here," after the set, and he's right. In a setting much like your living room, Metallica shreds like a new band vying for attention. Pardon the cliché, but its an awesome experience; they're the ultimate "fan's "band, the earlier ugliness with napster notwithstanding.

P.S. For those old enough to get it, James even resurrects the doorbell/landshark bit.

OK, first of all, the set for this CD is:

1. No Remorse
2. Fuel
3. Harvester Of Sorrow
4. For Whom The Bell Tolls (includes Frayed Ends Of Sanity Jam)
5. Master Of Puppets
6. Sad But True
7. Motorbreath
8. Seek & Destroy

The show was recorded in the basement of Grimey's Record Store in Nashville, TN in 2008.

To get my complaint about this CD out of the way first, it has tremendous amounts of digital distortion that would give Death Magnetic and Vapor Trails (by Rush) a run for their money. My other complaint is that the set for this is pretty predictable- lacking any real surprises (they don't play Phantom Lord, Through The Never, and Leper Messiah as much as I think they should, though I'm glad this CD spares me another live version of Enter Sandman).

That said, I absolutely love this CD. I like the atmosphere this show has (being recorded in a basement). Metallica is also in fine form in this show, and James' singing sounds as great as always. I think the best moments of this show are For Whom The Bell Tolls, Harvester Of Sorrow, and Motorbreath, though your opinions may vary from mine. Basically, if you can put up with this CD having a lot of digital distortion (which it really shouldn't to begin with, but there's nothing I can do about that), then it is definitely worth the money. Great show by a great band!

Metallica is always fun live, but this CD is awesome!! It's a little short, but SUPER intimate and it sounds really good. It's great hearing the banter between Hetfield and the small crowd in the basement at Grimey's. "Anybody wanna borrow a Mesa Boogie?" you gotta get the CD to know why that's so hilarious!

I also live in Nashville, so this is extra special to me, knowing it was recorded just a few miles away. Oh, it's also nice that the CD isn't laced with profanity like so much of their other live stuff. I don't really see the need for all of that foul language. This is a disc I can crank without worry! :-)
