A True Rarity in the Parliafunkadelicment Oeuvre!, July 4, 2010
This review is from: Live at the Howard Theater 1978 (Audio CD)
This is a hard CD to find, and probably was hard to find even when it was first released, as it was well after the Parliament-Funkadelic World of George Clinton peaked in terms of commercial popularity. I believe this came out in the early 90s, following Clinton's bleak period where he couldn't record under any of the P-Funk group's names then emerged victorious recording under the one name he'd never used, his own, with a string of funk/dance hits such as "Atomic Dog" and "Bullet Proof."
I also believe that this is the same program as another CD with a plainer (text only) cover.
Sound on this CD is pristine, as are many Japanese issues of live recordings. The Brides' program is a bit brief, but likely that was their whole show as they were rarely the "main event." At least, I'm sure that was true back in 1978. Theirs would have been a warm-up act for Funkadelic or possibly, Parliament. The program is mostly from their first album, generally considered their best of the two studio albums they released, though I always loved the second album due to the opus length title track "Never Buy Texas From a Cowboy." I also think this is the original (2-girl) lineup of Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva, whereas the second LP boasted three singers.
The only downside of this album is the inexplicable inclusion of a long, largely scatological and unfunny comedy routine by James Wesley Jackson (who?). I'm amazed this even got included on the CD, and tend to think, somewhat skeptically, that it was just to pad the CD's length.
But if you want a true souvenir of what I believe is the only live recording of either of the two backup girl groups to the P-Funk empire, be sure to get this if you can snap it up at a reasonable price. I found it for only about $30, though in the other incarnation with the plainer cover it seems to go for a lot more for some odd reason. You can also skip the comedy routine, as it's the last track!
