Wonderful solo performance from a master, July 15, 2001

Anyone who has had the pleasure of listening to Barry Harris live, or fortunate enough to catch him on Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz" radio series will know how much depth, knowledge, chops, and joy he brings to the music world. The Maybeck concert catches Harris in a similarly comfortable setting. His touch on ballads, his bop treatments on the tempos, evoke Bud Powell---but Harris is his own man. Only Harris could take "Meet the Flintstones" and "I Love Lucy" and transform them into lush romantic ballads.

a classic solo outing from Barry Harris, December 20, 2011
This review is from: Live at Maybeck 12 (Audio CD)
That Barry Harris opened his Maybeck Recital Hall appearance with a beautiful treatment of "It Could Happen to You," reveals alot about the diverse talent of this great pianist, who was noted more for his bop orientation than for playing ballads. Harris charges into a Monkish rendition of "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" and follows this with another ballad, "I'll Keep Loving You" which then segues into "She," with just the slightest hint of stride. There's a beautiful symmetry to Harris's program and to his playing too, which is full of subtleties - and surprises. Take the medley on the eighth track, which opens with a melting "It Never Entered My Mind," segues into the themes from "Meet the Flintstones" and then "I Love Lucy." Nothing is overstated or overplayed - just wonderful stuff.
Five stars!
