Live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. 26 (Bill Mays at Maybeck),

All you have to do is listen to Mays' interpretation of the Jitterbug Waltz by Waller, and you'll feel your heart burst when he starts with those quarter notes against what sounds like fifths. It is a rollercoaster ride. Extremely imaginative.

Genius at work,

This review is from: Live at Maybeck 26 (Audio CD)
This Maybeck Recital is ample proof of Bill Mays' stature as one of the great pianists of our time. The Maybeck series is the acid test of jazz piano, and Mays rises to the challenge, spontaneously creating masterpiece after masterpiece. His melodic, harmonic and rhythmic inventiveness provide ample study material for any serious student of jazz. Most of all, every note seems to flow without effort. He plays from the heart, but avoids sentimentality. I own 10 of the Maybeck piano recordings, and Mays is among my favorite performances, along with Adam Makowicz, Roger Kellaway, and Dick Hyman. My favorite track is a jaw-dropping version of Jitterbug Waltz, in which he introduces a boogie-woogie left hand during his improvisation. This CD appears to be out of print, but if you can get a copy, by all means, get it--you will not be disappointed.
