i first became of aware of kenny barron through his work with stan getz (a good example is mr. getz's "anniversary"). as an accompanist or even in a trio setting, mr. barron is complex, supportive, and imminently swinging in his approach. he can play both straight ahead and also avant garde. here in a solo conext, we experience mr. barron as mr. barron likes to play. he reworks some standards (listen to "skylark" or "spring is here") revealing a new inventiveness and freshness to this well-versed songs. he also plays his own work (listen to "bud-like" and "sunshower") revealing his own compositional artistry in ways that hook the listener and leave you wanting to explore much more. enjoy this set!

I absolutely loved Kenny Barron at The Maybeck Recital Hall. I prefer Kenny Barron solo.
Every cut was inimitable Kenny Barron. And what he did with the Standards! But his originals, BUD LIKE, were off the charts. That is until I heard SUNSHOWERS!!! Oh, that tune inspired me to write poetry. Kenny is so universal, as is jazz. The use of the HABANERA beat was delicious. BUT THEN AGAIN, that's Kenny Barron. His solo recital gave the listener a delicious menu from which to chose. And on this one I WAS A GOURMAND.
