Beautiful, impeccable playing by two jazz masters. Recorded live before an audience at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh in 1993, pianist Billy Taylor and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan (with Chip Jackson on bass and Carl Allen on drums) perform a program of chestnuts that show off the melodic and harmonic inventions of the group. Gorgeous ballad interpretations include DARN THAT DREAM, BODY AND SOUL, and especially COME SUNDAY, where there's no question we've been taken to church but where the sermon is uplifting, not damning. ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE pit Billy and Gerry in a friendly counterpoint battle from the git-go, and LINE FOR LYONS proves once again no matter how many times Mulligan plays the tune (and I wish I had a nickel for every time) he finds something fresh and exciting to express in it. It's a totally enjoyable CD - definitely worth getting.

Just absolutely beautiful work by the two of them. Excellent recording, Mulligan's sax sounds stunning. In some recording, Mulligan steamrolls his accompaniment, not here.

This is a live recording done in Pittsburgh, but the audio quality is first rate. Classic Mulligan, and surely one of the gems of his later career. This label is apparently gone, so this might soon be a hard to get item. An excellent purchase for anyone .
