5.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary New Jazz - Classical Brazilian Guitar, April 2, 2006
By
Isaac Stein (N.York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live at Montreux (Audio CD)
Since Egberto Gismonti made his debut on American soil, back in the seventies, we haven't heard nothing like that. This cd carries the live performances of Gui Mallon's ensemble in the famous Montreux Jazz Festival. The compositions bring a flavour of the Brazilian exotic fauna with impecable playing from all the excellent eleven musicians of this mini orchestra, which is formed of a classical string quintet, sax, flute, three percussionists and Gui Mallon on the guitar.

If the instrumentation is rare, the music's simply beyond any classification. There is nothing that can compares to that; a blend of Brazilian classical, folk music, jazz and contemporary. At times, it sounds like progressive jazz-rock or even renaissance music. Simply Amazing !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and strange smooth Jazz, June 29, 2005
This review is from: Live at Montreux (Audio CD)
From start to finish, this is a magical show. The guitarist is an elemental force in this great CD. He's stabbs at the guitar, as in the chaotic denouement of mystical power or limning an ominous waterfall. What pushes this album into the zone of innovation is his work as a sequencer and producer, which gives the lie to any accusation of a strang and smooth jazz from BRazil", this means jazz musicians superimposing their tunes on synthetic grooves. What Mallon does is infallibly organic, even when he's performing radical reconstructive surgery. There's more magic than junk to this experiment, and one can only hope he'll explore this avenue further. Great CD...

5.0 out of 5 stars A NEW STAR HAS ARRIVED !!!, October 12, 2004
By
This review is from: Live at Montreux (Audio CD)
Beautiful instrumental Brazilian music played live at the famous MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL. No tricks, only pure genuine sounds from acoustic instruments, arranged for 14 musicians . Original compositions that bring visions of a tropical paradise and, also, visions of the Brazilian urban inferno.
Gui Mallon's "Live at Montreux" is the most original, yet despretencious, sincere, Brazilian record in a long , long time. Tracks like IPANEMA SUNSET, LEK, CANTO INDIO are like paintings. A new star has arrived !!!
