Product Description

Performed for a tiny audience at the renowned Pachyderm Studio in 1998, this CD is the best example of what Indigenous sound like live. While their national debut Things We Do is an excellent introduction to their music, their live shows are far above and beyond any studio recording in terms of energy and performance, as the entire band frequently takes off into 10-minute jams to mind-blowing effect. Live at Pachyderm Studio provides a taste of that, including extended versions of several previously recorded songs, as well as previously unavailable material. An item of special interest is the cover of Hendrix's "Red House"; the guitarist's influence on Indigenous frontman Mato Nanji is undeniable. The production on this album is so clear, putting it in the stereo and cranking it up might be almost as good as hearing them live. This band is addictive, and Live at Pachyderm Studio is the perfect fix. --Genevieve Williams

If you like your blues-rock driving, fast, and energetic, then this is the CD for you. I feel that this CD captures the power that Indigenous brings to the live stage, much more than their two studio releases. I could listen to this CD for hours. Sure, Mato draws heavily from SRV and Hendrix (note their cover of "Red House"), but he reveals not only his ability to handle the styles of the masters, but also his talent to craft a new musical niche. Pte, Wanbdi, and Horse help bring the music on the CD to an unbelievable plateau. You can hear the fuller band sound on their studio releases, but this one showcases Mato's guitar prowess. My recommendation: Listen to everything that Indigenous puts out to appreciate their versatility.

I saw this band of 4 young native americans open for Kenny Wayne Shepard and BB King. Their live show was phenomenol with strong blues influence of Stevie Ray Vaughn. I thought they blew Kenny Wayne off the stage. BB King is still untouchable though at 73 years old! This CD captures them well.

If you don't have this CD yet get it NOW!, paint an 11 on your player, turn it to it and sit back. I just ordered my 3rd copy, this one to pass around to friends (others car & home). People got to hear the blues and this is THE REAL DEAL. When they come to your area don't mis-em live!

This is a tour de force for INDIGENOUS and specifically MATO NANJI. Great playing, good songs, great recording. I bought THINGS WE DO a while back and was debating whether the 4 new tracks alone would make buying this CD worthwhile. Don't hesitate as even the make over the other songs receive in a live
environment make them a new experience and RED HOUSE alone is worth the price. Not since HENDRIX and SRV has a guitarist sounded like this in a live gig. For my liking he sounds a little to close to his heros and needs to develope further into a style that will be recognisable as his. He has the talent and a lot of time on his side. This would be 5 stars were it not for the similar tone and style of SRV and HENDRIX.

Mato Nanji's blistering soulful licks are incredible. For just 25 years old, man this guy packs the spirits of many blues legends in his fingers.
With his Sister on drums and brother and cousin rounding up the percussion section, this is one tight awesome band.
I got a chance to see Indigenous on The BB King Blues Festival, in Dalton Georgia 9-23-99
The put on a great show, it was almost a letdown when KWS and BB King came on. I was wanting more Indigenous.
Mato's and Indigenous version of "Red House" by Hendrix is the best that I have ever heard. It conjures up Jimmy, SRV, and all the best Blues Guitarist all in one package, and goes one step further. Mato's blistering licks and incredible tone from his Fender Vibro King amp and Fender Stratocaster will satisfy any Guitarist.
Anyone wanting a Great Blues LIVE CD get this CD! Besides being great musicians, these Native Americans are for real, hailing from South Dakota, they are also very involved in the rights of Native Americans. This is something we could all be involved in as well.
I can only imagine what the future promises for Indigenous. But with CD's out as great as this early in their career, we can only hope of many, many great CD's by this band.

I have heard about these guys for a couple of years now, so I thought I would finally buy a disc and give 'em a listen. The ninties trend of young SRV-Hendrix blues/rockers has become a yawn so I didn't have high hopes for this CD. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. The economic vocals make this truely a guitar players' album which is unfortunate because I think young Mato (who I believe is singing most cuts because liner notes are vague) has an interesting voice, if not the the best of all the ninties' iteration. His vocal tone and inflections remind me most of a cross between SRV and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. A bit more work on vocal range and power will be of great benefit. Nonetheless, as others have said, Mato is a moster guitar slinger in the same vein of the SRV via Hendrix lineage (though don't expect quite the same calibur). Supporting band is adequate. Song selection is varied, but mostly blues/rockers. It appears he is playing a Gibson Flying-V, but he gets a decent "strat" sound out of it, thus proving once again that tone is mostly technique. My only major critisism is that when he runs out of licks, Mato resorts to the wah. This is, however, a fine example of some of the best contemporary blues/rock I have heard. I look forward to future releases.

THE MUSIC GETS YOUR ATTENTION AND HOLDS IT TILL THE VERY LAST NOTE OF THE LAST TRACK. THIS IS VERY IMPRESSIVE MUSICIANSHIP FROM A YOUNG GROUP. I HAVE LIKED THIS GROUP SINCE I FIRST HEARD THEM PLUS THEY ARE OPENING THE BLUES TO A NEW GROUP OF LISTENERS. I BOUGHT THEIR FIRST RECORD AND HAVE BEEN IMPATIENTLY WAITING FOR THIS ONE TO HIT THE SHELVES. IF YOU LIKE JIMI HENDRIX,YOU CAN FEEL HIS INFLUENCE ON THIS GROUP'S MUSIC AND IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE IT HAS BEEN RE-DONE. THEY GIVE THE BLUES AN INJECTION OF NEW TALENT AND ALSO INSURE THAT AS A GROUP THEIR MUSIC WILL BE A FORCE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR A LONG TIME TO COME.
