4.0 out of 5 stars Judy Great; Sound Quality Poor, December 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Live at the Palace (Audio CD)
Note: I've only given this four stars based on the overall package! Judy's singing is five-star,but the sound quality is so bad I have to retract one-star for listening purposes.

"Live at the Palace" is a great insight into Judy mid-way into her career. You can still hear traces of her "younger self" while the more mature "concert Judy" is clearly developed. What is not clear is the recording itself (a producer's note on the back apologizes, but surely there must be better filters for the tapes than were used on this CD). While not an audiophile edition, I found this CD to be quite delightful. Most of the concert recordings of Judy on CD are either 1960/61 or 1967, so this rare Feb 1952 performance is a gem, regardless of the poor sound quality. On the songs, I am not sure that this is a "complete recording" of one single evening at the Palace. There are some of the standards (Rock-a-bye and The Trolley Song) but the fades between songs leads me to believe this is a compilation of several performances.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rare Judy recording that is a treat despite poor sound!, August 15, 2004

This review is from: Live at the Palace (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful recording of Judy Garland at The Palace Theatre in New York City in February, 1952 near the end of her 17 week run. Her rapport with the audience is excellent; she takes requests and jokes very naturally. Garland fans will notice that she does the "routine" where she pretends that her shoes are too tight and takes them off as a way to endear herself to the crowd--not that this was necessary; but Judy always went the limit whenever she could!

Unfortunately, as another reviewer has noted the sound quality is poor and I would agree that the CD as a product should get four stars instead of five since the sound is far from perfect! I don't understand why better recording equipment was not used. Another disappointment is that this almost certainly not a full and complete recording of the concert; there are several points along the way where the sound of Judy's voice and the audience fades out and then the next track on the CD starts at another point during the performance.

Judy's voice is in excellent form for this concert. It is a great treat since as another reviewer noted it is not easy to find recordings of Judy live in concert from this time period. In short, I strongly recommend this CD for Garland fans! This CD is harder to find for a GOOD reason--it's a BUY! GRIN

5.0 out of 5 stars Melts Even the Hardest Heart, February 11, 2011
By
This review is from: Live at the Palace (Audio CD)
I'm giving this one 5-stars (as a rule I don't pay attention to the technical aspects of live recordings -- especially monophonic "high fidelity" captures of concerts from 1952, for crying out loud). The famous, huge and bombastic 1961 Carnegie Hall album is still her diamond standard live set, and the concerts from the later 1960's are studies in tragedy and fortitude. But this disc has more warmth and intimacy than any other in her catalog. Here Judy was just 30 years old, still young, sharp as a tack and dead-on professional throughout, but as giggly, self-effacing, and appealing as a girl could ever be. Knowing the dark valleys she would soon pass through, it brings a bittersweet smile to hear her joking and laughing, obviously enjoying herself every minute. And yes, she sings her fool head off, with all that indescribably rich, unforgettable tone and delivery on glorious display.
