This amazing CD (and its Blu-ray counterpart) essentially servers as a time capsule for Queen fans and rock fans in general. It offers listeners a trip back to 1974, prior to Queen hitting mass success. "Queen Live at the Rainbow 74" offers a rare glimpse into Queen's early, heavier style; capturing the group live at time when they were still striving to establish themselves as a truly great rock band.

The first set on "Queen Live at the Rainbow 74" (recorded in March of 1974) was originally intended to be released as a live record to help support Queen's first two albums but was shelved in favor of recording their next studio album (which would eventually become "Sheer Heart Attack").

That said, the material on the CD may not be familiar to many people who identify themselves as Queen fans (and that's completely understandable). It's easy to forget that Queen was a band that produced 15 studio albums and as a result, many fans are simply unaware of the powerful brilliance and dark intensity of Queen's earliest material. Better stated, "old Queen" did not start with "A Night at the Opera"; it started with Queen and Queen II. When haring this material performed live you'll not only realize how rich and diverse Queen's catalog of material is; you'll also realize that Queen was a band that had many different musical incarnations and was constantly reinventing themselves while at the same time retaining the stylistic elements that made their sound truly unique.

In addition to the March concert (which was in support of Queen and Queen II), listeners will also have the treat of hearing (and seeing) a November 1974 performance which includes material from both earlier albums and material from "Sheer Heart Attack".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound and video of early Queen September 12, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have been a Queen fan since 1976 and saw them live in 1980. At the time Queen was one of the most underated live bands. While I have enjoyed the post 1982 live concerts that have been released they seem to be a peat-repeat of the same concert staples. However, the Live at the Rainbow are live tracks from Queen's first three releases. I can't believe the quality of the sound in these recordings. The concert video is well done, not the choppy cuts we have become accustomed. There are some nice overlays of Brian and Freddie on piano, that are just amazing. The only disappointment with the song selection is that there are no Roger Taylor songs so we could hear his great voice.
I love the packaging, the memorabilia and the book are all nice and the box it comes in is sturdy.
The Bluray is not full screen, but it is sharp and clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely astounding, perfect release September 12, 2014
By Fenwick

This is a review of the deluxe box set. Many of us die hard Queen fans have been in a perpetual case of limbo over the past few years. With a number of Queen blu ray and DVD releases focusing on their 80s catalog, we were left feeling grateful about additional product from our music heroes, but wondering when the vastly under-exposed early years would ever see the light of day.

Boy oh boy does this box set do it justice. Two live CDs from March and November of 1974, covering tours for the Queen II and just released Sheer Heart Attack albums. In addition to this, we are treated to an up-scaled standard blu ray of the November show, with a couple of bonus cuts from the March show. In a word, the music on this is ferocious. The band was notorious for being perfectionists, and I have to say, the dedication to their craft really shines through here. Freddie's voice is in top form. Roger and John play as solidly as ever. But Brian is really, truly on fire.

Hearing these guys rip through the set lists with such unstoppable energy is such a joy. And hearing classic album cuts like Ogre Battle, BOTH versions of In the Laps of the Gods, my personal favorite, Flick of the Wrist. This is not the pop Queen that developed over the late 70s and into the 80s. (Don't get me wrong, I love virtually their entire catalog). But this is the much heavier rock based sound from their first few albums that far fewer people are familiar with overall.

Bottom line, the songs are performed brilliantly and sound better than ever, The video definitely shows its' wear and there are quite a few moments where the picture is pretty grainy. But no matter. This is the stuff of legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing raw energy September 12, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Amazing raw energy! The early period of Queen has always been my favorite and the heaviness, creativity, and dynamic energy of the first 3 albums has always been under appreciated. Queen has always been known as a studio band, yet they do a fantastic job of translating their work into a live show - the theme seems to be "turn it up and make it heavy". This is a must have for any Queen fan - I also recommend it to fans of hard rock or anyone who wishes to explore the tapestry of earlier forms of heavier music.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe how lucky we all are !!!! September 15, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Queen were perhaps the first band that I became a fan of pretty much all by myself. And I always grabbed their records when they were available, & appreciated each one for what it was worth, & as you expect, some were favored more than others, only to have the opposite be the favorite a few years later !

In all this time however, I have always felt that the first 3 - Queen albums had the most power, imagination, & progression that all the successive albums didn't have as much of. They're raw, heavy, & are very much unique in that you have to play each album from start to finish, or you don't play them at all. You have to take the time to savor the "whole", as each tune interweaves with the next. It was realizations like these that made them very special.

For me, personally, this newly released boxed set is a very remarkable achievement, in that it brings the band to me from that time, in a live format that I never ever thought was going to be possible, since I didn't know that these recordings existed. And even more astonishing, is that the events were filmed...

The result is beyond words, & I'm very pleased to say the least that a release like this has been made possible, & can only thank the people that made it all happen.

Sound quality is excellent, irrespective of it being 1974.
Picture quality is as good as it gets, all things considered. The 6-cameras on-site did well to capture what they did.
The Book & the extras make this boxed-set very special indeed. Quality is 1st rate.
Packaging is superb.

This is an incredible release, & have no doubt about it being a very special collection of a very dynamic & powerful band, on the verge of world super-stardom.

Enjoy !!!!!!
