5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely my favorite album., January 20, 2002
By
KARL PAPADANTONAKIS (Pasadena, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live at Scullers (Audio CD)
I've listened to this album about 50 times, and I'm still not tired of it. Firstly, any pianist will be amazed by Benny Green's speed with the heavy but very cleverly chosen six-note chords, and the ultra-fast melodies that come in octaves here and there. All 7 tracks are loaded with licks that will make you want to pause the CD over and over till you've "figured it out". Secondly, all three musicians have developed ideas in all seven pieces to such an extent that the result is so rich that one gets the impression that they could go on for hours without getting bored. Thirdly, all members of the trio are extremely attentive to the overall balance, resulting in great crescendos and flawless synchronized rhythm on the heads, and the power of the bass is always there. Finally, the sound quality is as good as it gets with CDs. It's a live performance, but it's well-miked and the audience has good taste so you don't miss what happens after every solo due to cheering, while the cheering does add to the energy at the right times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Performance, August 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Live at Scullers (Audio CD)
I certainly think that this CD is one of Benny Greens best trio recordings ever. With his flying arpeggio runs, and great harmonies, he certainly brings the audience to life. Ray and Gregory do a great job of adding excitement and creativty as well. Not only that, but this recording is live which makes you feel like your'e actually there. This is a CD you definitely should consider buying because if you don't, you're missing out on the best jazz out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unpretentious, swinging jazz., January 12, 2000

This review is from: Live at Scullers (Audio CD)
This record makes me think that Ray Brown could be hooked up to a generator and used as an alternative form of power -- less dangerous than a nuclear reactor and a lot more fun. Brown, Green, and Hutchinson generate enough drive and swing to illuminate a small city on this recording. Their version of 'Freddie Freeloader' is a long way from that recorded on 'Kind of Blue', and all the better for it; Brown's bass is earth-shattering on this track. Green and Hutchinson are in top form throughout, and it sounds like everyone -- the band and the audience -- had a grand time at Scullers that night. This is the sort of record that can make the unbeliever a jazz zealot with a single listen.
