4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and stripped of gimmicks, a lovely EP, March 26, 2000
By stewart (London, Engerland) - See all my reviews
Jeff Buckley has always had a mystique about him since his untimely death. No recording of his generates this mystique better than the 'live at Sin-E' EP. The first two songs, Mojo Pin and Eternal life, actually sound better than on the album 'Grace' because of the lack of backing instruments. 'Eternal life' inparticular is far more heartfelt and melodic on this EP. 'Je ne connais pas le fin' is so innocent and touching, while his mammoth length version of Van Morrison's 'The way young lovers do' is incredible. Just to hear Jeff Buckleys voice towards the end of the song where it rises to impossible tones, is cataclysmic, sends a shiver down my spine every time I hear it. On the minus side, for the price, other songs or out-takes could have been released, but as it is, this is a fine introduction to the astonishing singing and guitar work- it is only him and the guitar- that Jeff Buckley was rightly revered for.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd been there, January 1, 2000
By Jeremy Greene (Tipperary and London) - See all my reviews
Two standout moments on this awesome live EP. 1: The guitar intro to Eternal Life 2: The bit when he's doing the accapella singing on The Way Young Lovers Do - his voice hits an impossible peak while battering his chiming acoustic. You must listen to it. You'll be amazed to think that was done live. Pure genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live at sin-é started a dream..., September 23, 2000
By Peter Soetens (Mechelen, Provincie Antwerpen Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Back in 1993, this beautiful EP came out of nowhere and those who heard it where struck by the emotional purity, the incredible vocals and the great guitar-player this fellow Jeff Buckley was.

With only a guitar, his voice, his angers and his love he could not only hypnotise the visitors at the NY bar sin-é (speak out : shenay), but through this live recording also the rest of the world could hear what an artist Buckley was. It's all magic on this record : from the dreamy ("This is a song about a dream...") Mojo Pin and the furious Eternal Life to the incredible beautiful Piaf-cover "Je n'en connais pa la fin". The final track "The Way young lovers do" is a 10-minute cover of the Van Morrison-classic. It shows the improvising talent and the spontanity that Buckley had and puts yet again his stunning guitar-playing capacities on display.

Although Grace is definitely my favourite album all time, Live at sin-é is to me as important as the later work of Jeff, because it shows the young, less experienced but pure Jeff Buckley before he completely gets sucked into the music business.

Back in 1993, a wonderful EP came out and one of the best musicians ever was born... If you liked Grace, you'll definitely like this. If you've never heard of Jeff Buckley before or you don't like his music, you'd better buy Grace now before you are permanently doomed to be a musical illiterate ...
