This superb live recording done in 1992 at legendary jazz night club Sweet Basil serves as a fine example of the greatness of Nick Brignola's baritone sax artistry. Although not as well known as Gerry Mulligan or Harry Carney, etc. he is to me the finest hard bop baritone saxiphonist. He died in 2002, and left a legacy of joyously swinging recordings. (See my other reviews of his recordings.)
He is accompanied by a rhythm section consisting of Mike Holobar, piano: Rich Syracuse, bass; and frequent collaborator, and swinging drummer Dick Berk.
The track lengths are from 9 to 12 minutes, giving the quartet ample time to dig into standards including "Autumn Leaves" ,"East of the Sun", "I Hear a Rhapsody" ,"Everything Happens to Me" and "Sister Sadie." If you have any doubts that the baritone can sound as supple and swinging as a tenor or alto sax, then Brignola's breathtaking technique should dispel your doubts.
If you like hard bop served without frills, listen to this classic recording.
