Editorial Reviews

2010 reissue of this two CD live set from Ireland's most loved band. The Dubliners were formed in 1962 and made a name for themselves playing regularly in O'Donoghue's Pub in Dublin. Initially known as The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group, the change of name came about due to Drew's unhappiness with the name, coinciding with the fact that Kelly was reading Dubliners by James Joyce at the time. Live At Vicar Street is a live album recorded by The Dubliners at a concert at Vicar Street in Dublin on Sunday, 23 July 2006 as part of their Irish tour. 35 tracks.

I could listen to this CD over and over and over again. This is a great place to start for anyone trying to get into the dubliners as the studio versions of pretty much any dubliners song has not really aged to well in my opinion, they all sound about as old as they are but the dubliners live is truly timeless. Listening to these songs being performed and an entire theater singing along is about as warming as a shot of whiskey, this CD just always makes me happy. There is only one reason why I gave this CD 4 stars instead of 5 and that's that the DVD/youtube videos of these songs have some added dialouge cut out of some of these songs. The biggest example I can think of is on "I wish I had someone to love me." On the DVD and youtube there is an opening of Barney explaining the song and it's pretty humorous, but on here they basically cut out the whole thing which really stinks because hearing Barney talk is just great and the "If you've never heard this song before...well then this will be your first time" line is one of my favorite moments on the whole of live at vicar street. I always thought the dialouge really added to the experience so it really stinks to not have it on the album but regardles this is still an album everyone should listen to and in my opinion you can't claim to be a fan of Irish music if you haven't listened to this yet.

This was one of the best Irish songfests I've ever heard. These fellows have been doing this gig for decades and is one of the smoothest acts I've ever seen. Each man is a superb musician on his main instrument and and just marginally less so on their other instruments. The only glaring problem is that the DVD won't play on the Blue Ray player as the DVD is in PAL format, It played well on my DVD player, which is what I'm basing this review on. They also appeared on the show with Orla Fallon and were just as good there even micxed with other singers!
