Lives up to the sum of it's parts.,
This review is from: Live At Voce (Audio CD)
Live at Voce is the debut CD from a band that has been touring off and on since 2007. Though Steve Gadd is a master of many genres, it would seem that this is the type of music he truly enjoys playing the most. This is not a 'drummers record' per se. It is a quartet playing well aware of each others talents, as if nobody wants to be the weak link. The music seems to breathe with its deep grooves and emotional expressionism. Live at Voce was recorded in an intimate setting in Scottsdale, Arizona, at Voce's Lounge. It's recorded as if the band is playing right in front of you. You can hear the ambiance of the gig; counting off the tunes, just enough of people cheering and clapping, and the clinking of an occasional glass.

For all you big Steve Gadd fans, like myself, this is a great recording. Most of the songs have amazing drum solos and fantastic grooves. The band Gadd assembled is top notch. Joey DeFrancesco on Hammond Organ plays like the pro that he is. Ronnie Cuber adds inspiring solos as well. Overall, I give this recording 5 stars and recommend it highly.

"Live At Voce" by Steve Gadd & Friends is a tremendous album of toe tapping enjoyable jazz music. The more I listen to it the better it gets. You will enjoy some really amazing music from each of the band members - Joey DeFrancesco, Ronnie Cuber, Paul Bollenback, and Steve Gadd. This is the perfect album that you will enjoy from start to finish. Plus --> You will enjoy the superb bonus tracks featuring Steve Gadd and Edie Brickell!

I bought this after reading the review in Modern Drummer magazine. It landed their top rating: "classic"It's good but I do not feel that it is that exceptional after listening to and owning many Steve Gadd CDs and videos et al. A couple things that bug me about this record are: 1 - No bass player. I'd much sooner here a real bass player rather than organ pedals. 2 - The drums are mixed way too out front. I know it's his record but sometimes the big hits and cymbal crashes reach distortion levels! When Steve hits, HE HITS!! Steve's solos/drum breaks are FABULOUS!! Always are!! There are many superb moments here and it's a fun record. Just a few details (to me) would have put it over the top.

I witnessed a stop on this concert tour. The whole thing is amazing. The musicians have been around for a long time and know how to put on a great show.
