5.0 out of 5 stars Divine!, February 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Live at Yoshi's (Audio CD)
This is an inspired album. Many of the tracks of this live CD appeared in studio form on Ms. Bridgewater's DEAR ELLA CD. Dee Dee does not try to immitate Ella Fitzgerald but she certainly brings Ella's warmth and grace to this great live recording. You really do feel that you're at Yoshi's as Dee Dee and her wonderful band work the room. This is a great album for fans and newcomers alike. It really showcases Dee Dee's command of scat-singing.

Jazz afficionados and friends everywhere: If you like brisk jazz, scat, energy, pep, zeal, passion, soul, and emotion all tied up into a single sound this is the CD for you. I am a Jazz junkie; if anything out there comes even close to the ability and expression of Dee Dee on this album I would be shocked. Hook me up to this CD and let me be.

Dee Dee's expression and ability to entertain only adds to her well-seasoned ability to vocalize. The standards are reborn in the arrangements. You have absolutely got to hear Love for Sale. She has so much fun doing what she does, it's hard to imagine hearing anyone sing in a studio while being this expressive. Her band should be made saints; talent on top of talent on top of talent.

TRUST ME!! YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS CD

Dee Dee is great and there is no doubt about that. My first point is to tell you to see this woman live. You will so impressed you will talk about it for days. As for this album? Dee Dee is known as much for her voice as for her stage presence. She is a top notch, extremely intelligent performer. She has sass a wit for days. This is one jazz album that even your friends who are not into jazz will appreciate. Buy Buy Buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars DEE DEE IS AWESOME!, May 3, 2000

This is the first time I have heard Dee Dee Bridgewater. Her voice has soul. Listening to just one song will not tell you just how talented she really is. She is the best jazz singer today that I've heard so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Sushi, February 15, 2000
This review is from: Live at Yoshi's (Audio CD)
I first heard this album while driving northwards, at night, through the heart of France. Bridgewater's voice made the car float over the blacktop. She's rich, she's full of power, she's fresh AND traditional and above all she's FUN! If you want to vibrate from your soles to your soul, this is the album you've been waiting for.

5.0 out of 5 stars LIVE - As it should be, May 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Live at Yoshi's (Audio CD)
This album takes you there!

You get the energy, wit, humor and extraordinary talent of the incomperable Dee Dee Bridgewater at her absolute best.

She is already recognized as one of the most important jazz singers. She will undoubtedly be heralded as the most significant vocalist of her genre to come in the past several generations.

Anyone who has ever seen her live will attest that she is unbelievable. You want to jump out of your seat and dance. You howl with laughter - she's an amazing comedian. She can turn around and sing the most sophisticated ballad and then follow it up with an uncanny Armstrong horn impersonation. The musicians are fierce, Dee Dee is on fire and the audience is going wild! It's almost as good as being there.

This is Bridgewater at her amazing, fun, funky, hysterical best.

If you love jazz, you will love this album.

If you don't love jazz, this will open up a whole new world.

She's not your Grandma's jazz singer - she's that and a whole lot more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, enjoyable, audiophile quality classic, May 23, 2001

This CD just makes me smile.

Dee Dee is having fun, and it shows. Surrounded by top class musoes, and added to that the wonderful ambience of this live gig you can see why. She's cheeky, innovative, and just great value. Her scat is tasteful, her flugel horn/trombone solo, well, just so left field, and her James Brown impressions and those of Ella Fitzgerald will make you cry with laughter.

On top of this this is an audiophile recording like few others. There is so much micro detail going on, this will really test your system for resolution. From macro perspective the tamborine whacks on Track 2 will also reveal dynamic limitations of your setup.

But forgetting all that, this CD is just totally absorbing and truly great entertainment. Good one, Dee Dee.

Not only is Dee Dee Bridgewater rooted in classic Jazz Vocals, but she is one of the world's most reknowned Scat specialists! This woman, in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald, can out scat ANYONE! There is an amazing warmth and intimacy about this concert which is instantly evident in this recording and the rapport she shares with her audience is not only comical but loving as well. She performs some very impressive versions of classic Jazz Vocal masterpieces such as "Undecided and "Cherokee," among others. The real treats here are in her hilarious spoken intro to "Slow Boat to China" and a rousing and absolutely kick-ass (complete with a rap) version of James Brown's raunchy "Sex Machine." Check it out and you'll see what I mean! This is one BANGIN' live album and quite possibly one of the best live albums EVER next to say, Natalie Cole's "Natalie...LIVE!" from 1978. Though vocally they do not compare, it's all about the presentation here and in one listen, you SWEAR you're right in the same room WITH her! It's amazing and the delivery of ALL the songs showcased here is spot on!
