I'm rating this 6 STARS!!! Simply Superb!,
This review is from: Live at Zardi's (Audio CD)
I'm a huge fan of Oscar Peterson and have collected most of his albums. Recorded live at Zardi's on 8 November 1955, this is truly one of his best albums. Together with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis, Oscar put on one of the most dazzling performances in his life. You will find yourself jiving and bopping, from start to end of this incredible one and a half hour double CD. In short, this is a MUST BUY for every jazz fan out there. Just ask my wife. For a jazz-tolerent person, even she thinks it's a great album. So, what are you waiting for?

Recorded at famous Hollywood jazz venue in 1955, this two-disc live performance captures the lyricism of cool jazz that typified the post-war scene. No drumming here. Herb Ellis keeps the the beat on guitar with Ray Brown on bass and Oscar at the piano.
Oscar selected 30 tunes over several sets for 2.5 hours of thoroughly enjoyable music. Mostly standards with a few original compositions added. Most renditions are upbeat and lilting, with Oscar providing his signature sub-vocals.

I enjoy this CD because it shows O.P. is probably the best performer when you talk about small jazz groups. The tracks are varied and shows off the versatility of the trio.

i grew up listening to alot of Oscar Peterson Trio as Oscar was my Mother's favorite jazz pianist [she was a piano player] & so
i heard LPs like this alot when my Mom was doin' house chores... Peterson, Waller, Tatum, etc, etc, etc... so, i LOVE this trio ! this group of recordings from this show is my favorite recording of Oscar w/ his trio... this 2 CD set was recorded at a small club on a slow night yet the trio swings relentlessly though out this 2 1/2 hour set... i LOVE how they improvise off the songs & how intuitive they interact with one another = Amazing !!! as a professional guitar player, i am still blown away by Herb Ellis' playing in this trio & love how he responds to Peterson's improvisations with his own furious jams ! IMHO, if you want the ultimate piano/guitar/bass trio recording of swingin' Jazz- this is it.

If you're a boomer who likes 50's jazz this is the one. A great stylist who still plays a recognizable tune. One of my favorites!

Reversed Samples,

This review is from: Live at Zardi's (Audio CD)
On Amazon the discs' samples are reversed, at least the Windows media ones. For example Disc: 1 (Windows Media) 3. Herbie's Tune, actually plays Disc: 2 (Windows Media) 3. Pompton Turnpike and vice versa . |
