An interesting internet radio source
on June 9, 2014
Live365 is a curating and streaming service. It has an incredibly wide range of stations with some real jewels, some real junk and a lot in between. There are many tightly themed stations like "trekdom radio" which I enjoy on occasion but can't take as a steady diet. There is the freewheeling "no timewarp radio" which I enjoy in the alternative/pop space. Sometimes when I'm in a 60's mood there are several Vietnam radio stations that do a great job with the music of my formative years in the late 60's to early 70's. There is a great select of Jazz, cajun, blues, pop, metal, comedy, politics, and a lot more.
Streaming quality depends on the station. Some stream at 64kbps some are 128kbps. Usually at least FM radio quality. Startup for a station isn't instant-on. There is a setting for buffering which defaults to 15 seconds. This seems a bit long to me and setting the buffering to 10s seems quite sufficient on my Kindle Fire HD.
Most stations I've listened to have a relatively short loop. I'd guess 4 or 8 hours. Some of these get updated frequently and some very infrequently. Of course the better ones do seem to update their loops more frequently.
The interface is good with search and category based browsing. I found it easy to find stations and add them to my presets. Works well for me.
Bottom line is the variety of sources and a quite usable app. The subscription is getting a bit expensive, but there aren't commercials. Whatever my mood I can usually find a station that will fit. I think Live365 gets 5 stars from me.
