Comment: This book has already been well loved by someone else and that love shows. It MIGHT have highlighting, underlining, be missing a dust jacket, or SLIGHT water damage, but over-all itâ?TMs still a good book at a great price! Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2–When lively Elizabeth pushes Joe Fitzhugh at school, she sets off a domino effect with falling children and broken toys in its wake. In the aftermath, as the children sort themselves out, the blame eventually falls to Elizabeth. Joe shouts at her, "What have you done? You pushed me and hurt everyone!" Luckily for her, Joe and her classmates (there are no adults in evidence) accept her sincere apology, and they all head outside to play with no further incident. The text is placed in and around the illustrations for maximum effect as it describes in detail who falls into whom and the ensuing damage. Thomas's illustrations make the whole thing work. The action is clear, as are the consequences of that ill-fated push. The myriad children wear wacky costumes, have expressive faces, and are awash in detail that makes multiple readings a joy.Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH

From Booklist

Rambunctious Elizabeth pushes her classmate Joe, “And Joe in turn / knocked Ethan Snell, / who tumbled down / on Annabelle, / who bumped Norine / against the wall / so that the books / fell down on . . . / Saul,” and so on through the classroom. After all the children have fallen, each one turns around and blames the ones behind, until everyone is glaring at Elizabeth. Unlike the cautionary tales of previous generations, this one ends quite happily, with a brief apology that all the children accept. The rhythmic, rhyming text rolls along smoothly. Though delightful, colorful and full of lively details, the illustrations are less convincing than the text in their depiction of the domino effect that results after Elizabeth pushes Joe. Still, for parents wanting a picture book illustrating the perils of pushing, this one should nicely suffice. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Elizabeth starts an unexpected chain reaction when one morning she decided to push young Joe Fitzhugh. Joe then falls on Ethan, who falls on Annabelle, who falls on Saul, who falls on Evangeline, who falls on Adelle.... well you get the picture. There's lots of delightful crashing and smashing and bouncing about until young Joe Fitzhugh gets mad at you know who. After a heart felt apology all is forgiven and play resumes. It's a simple little story that's told with some surprisingly good rhymes considering all of those names. It has a great read aloud flow and I like that Elizabeth was truly sorry and was quickly forgiven by her playmates. It's a great cautionary tale about the dangers of being a bit too lively.

The illustrations are energetic, finely detailed and colorful. The children portrayed are very expressive and sort of old fashioned. They are all dressed in different play clothes and make for a very charming lot. They will prompt many requests for repeat readings as kids match up all those kids with all of those names! A big recommend for group or one on one sharing. Lively Elizabeth is a true story time treat. Recommended.

Format: Hardcover
"Lively Elizabeth! What Happens When You Push" is a quirky, cautionary tale about a very spirited girl who gets just a bit too carried away. Delightfully embellished with colorful, charming detailed drawings, "Lively Elizabeth!" rhymes its moral into the hearts and souls of its audience. "Lively Elizabeth!" does a first rate job of delivering a sermonette on accountability to young children, then, with a gentle twist, teaches forgiveness.
