5.0 out of 5 stars personal stories written entirely by elderly, April 20, 2005
This review is from: Lively Aging (Paperback)
An anthology of poems, thoughts and personal stories written entirely by our elderly friends

We talk a lot about the aged these days. We talk and discuss them but do we really listen to them?

Through respect and affection for our elderly friends, the International Federation of Little Brothers invited hundreds of elderly people to share with us their reflections on life as they grow older.

Lively Aging is the title of this book whose authors from the United States, Quebec, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland and Mexico share with us their happy and sad moments, their projects, their passions, and all that they feel but haven't had the opportunity to express.

Following are two excerpts from Lively Aging:

I'll Show You
Look at me. I look fragile, homemade shawl around my shoulders,
huddled at my kitchen table, keeping warm by a hot plate on the stove.
Poor little Agnes, you must think. Well, look again.
You don't have to know how old I am.
But you should all know that dreams have nothing to do with age...
I'm learning computers now, I do data entry.
I'll Show You.

Agnes, 76 years old

"Love till Death Do Us Part"
Aren't we lucky to be still together after a lifetime of love,
Understanding, caring for each other, and tenderness?
That's what I say to all our friendly neighbors
Whom I invite for supper or lunch ever so often.
My daughter always calls me a "food pusher."
I'm happy when people eat my food.
We love to cook our own meals,
Dad cutting the meat and veggies and I, doing the cooking.
Don't we dad?
Our daughter would like to have us live closer to her in Indiana
So she could pamper us, she says.
You know what she did?
She has one of our neighbors "spy" on us
So that we do not overwork in the garden.
Well...we spy on the neighbor, too.
So when we see him go in the car, we just
Sneak into our beloved garden and work!
Doesn't anyone understand that problems just
Disappear when we work in the garden?

Edna and Clifford, 85 and 86 years old
