Product Description

"What kind of person am I? What kind of professional will I become?" These are the questions that the authors pose to the reader in Who Am I in the Lives of Children, Eighth Edition. Taking a child-centered approach and focusing on values and ethics the authors present the foundation and the tools that pre-service teachers need to become the kind of teacher that can make a difference in a child's life. The book offers the following pedagogical tools to help accomplish this goal: *Reflection Boxes--encourage reflective thinking.*Learning Outcomes--relate to the NAEYC standard for the content covered in each chapter.*To Learn More--This section includes suggestions for projects to help students learn more about the content in the chapter.*For Your Portfolio--This part suggests items that students may want to add to their professional portfolio to create a document that can be presented later to prospective employers. Practical and clear in its orientation, the book lays out the foundation of the field of early childhood education. Each chapter in the book is constructed to help students to gain awareness, acquire knowledge, or develop skills in an essential are of early childhood education. Each chapter builds on the one before it to present a constructivist, developmental approach to the field. It is the hope of the authors that students reading the book will be empowered to become a competent, nurturing, and reflective early childhood educator and an active and committed advocate for young children. New To This Edition: NEW:Alignment with NAEYC standards -- a supplement to the table of contents shows how each chapter addresses NAEYC Standards for Professional Preparation. NEW: Ethics Reflections--Throughout the text examples of common ethical dilemmas are presented with thought-provoking questions designed to help students to reflect on their ethical responsibilities and the use of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct. NEW: Golden Rules--Clear, concise, easy-to-remember guidelines and recommendations for practice are presented in boxed format in chapters related to classroom practice (e.g. Golden Rules for Writing Anecdotal Records, Golden Rules for Designing Learning Environments, Golden Rules for Talking with Children). 4.0 out of 5 stars Excellently Written And Informed Despite Lack of Citations, February 5, 2006
By Reginald Williams (Denmark, SC United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Lagging a bit behind Jo Ann Brewer's and George S. Morrison's texts, Feeney & Company's book thoroughly presents the field in its essentials and reference points, but fails to internally cite the groundmaking scholarly works that put forth the concepts. With ever increasing accountability in the field, teachers need much training in accumulating the internal integrity and knowledge through a historical derived logic. Knowning where commonplace early childhood concepts originate begins this training.

A good third text.

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay but politically correct liberal bias included, March 6, 2009
I had to buy this book for class and while I enjoy some of the discussion sections for each chapter, I think it lacks aspects which would make this better for students. Not to mention, it is politically correct, liberal in some of its comments which some conservatives won't like. I bought from the marketplace sellers so hopefully not giving money to the original author/companies. The book should include vocabulary separately, so you can isolate and memorize key concepts of the chapters. It also seemed to jump around in topic. When you are trying to understand new concepts, that is not a good idea. It is hard to correlate what they are saying, with what you need to learn.
